Video: Cyclist hospitalised as kangaroo leaps across road

Animal was killed instantly in high speed collision in New South Wales

A cyclist in Australia was left with bruises and stitches when he was hit by a kangaroo while out on a group ride, with the impact of the collision killing the animal instantly.

Dominic Shepherd from Junee, New South Wales, was in a group of 20 riders travelling at 40 kilometres an hour when the large marsupial attempted to bound across the road at right angles to him, knocking him from the bike.

The incident which took place between Harefield and Wagga was captured on camera by a cyclist riding behind him, with doctor riding with them administering first aid before he was taken to hospital, reports 9 News.

Mr Shepherd said: “Four lots of stitches, skinned knees, bruising all over my body, and my thumbs where I landed on the grips - I can’t move my thumbs.”

He added: “It’s just one of those things. It’s pretty rare but it does happen, it’s part of the game.”

Last month in Victoria, four cyclists ended up in hospital after one skidded on the carcass of a dead kangaroo, believed to have been killed earlier in a collision with a  motor vehicle.

The Australian government has now passed a law forcing all kangaroos to wear helmets and carry id, on pain of an inappropriately large fine.

So that's how they get their meat for the barbi. Hope the rider is ok, could have been worse.

Sad indeed. But they are common roadkill around here unfortunately.

We don't have roos up here, but we have wallabies.

I hit a 6ft roo Wednesday evening between Glenrowan and Wangaratta. Nothing broken except the bike, some skin off and lots of bruising to my lower back. A huge thanks to the young bloke in the 4x4 that stopped to help and give me a lift home.

That's a wallaby, not a kangaroo! Roos can be up to 1.8m high and weigh a lot. The rider would be lucky to still be with us if he'd been hit by a roo.

There is more than one species each of kangaroo and wallaby. Also roos tend to start out small and get bigger over time. So let's leave marsupial identification to the aussies . / pedantry.

These injuries were blatantly caused by lack of disc brakes!
