World championship gold again for Laura Trott as she wins the omnium

British rider will defend Olympic title in Rio as reigning world champion

Laura Trott has won her second gold medal of the 2016 UCI track World Championships, adding the omnium title to the scratch race she won on Thursday evening.

Trott went into the last of the six events, the points race, with a lead of 12 points over Laurie Berthon of France though the biggest threat to her was seen as Sarah Hammer of the USA, who had beaten her in last night's elimination race.

The British rider, who won the omnium on this track on its Olympic debut at London 2012, immediately extended the gap by taking the first of the 10 sprints ahead of Hammer, and continued to extend her lead throughout.

Hammer moved up into the silver medal position ahead of the final sprint, but finished with bronze as she and Berthon went head to head in the charge for the line, the French rider prevailing to claim silver.

Yesterday evening, Trott was track centre preparing for one of the six omnium events when her fiancée Jason Kenny won the individual sprint, and this afternoon he went for a second gold medal after reaching the keirin final.

Boxed in initially, he tried to come round the outside on the penultimate lap but the effort cost him and he was tailed off in last place as Germany's Joachim Eilers.

If he had won, that would make it two golds apiece for the couple this week at the Lee Valley VeloPark, the same as they achieved there at the London 2012 Olympics which was when their relationship was made public after they appeared at the beach volleyball on Horse Guards Parade together.
