Cyclist ‘with an erection’ spotted in Manchester city centre – police go ‘to take a look’

Distressed woman reports Lycra-clad man in over-excited state

Police launched a search on Tuesday afternoon following a report that a man in Lycra had been spotted in an aroused state in Manchester city centre.

The Manchester Evening News reports that a woman contacted police about the man, who she had seen at the tram stop at Piccadilly. He was said to be in his fifties and wearing Lycra cycling shorts.

At the time, the GMP City Centre Twitter account posted: “Call from female reporting a male in lycra cycling shorts with an erection at Piccadilly tram stop. Patrols on route [sic] to take a look.”

The man proved hard to find. A later tweet read: “No trace of any males in lycra shorts in Piccadilly, looks like he’s cycled off. No offences reported by informant.”

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman later said:

“At 4.19pm, GMP received a call from a female reporting a suspicious male in his 50s wearing Lycra cycling shorts with what she thought was an erection at the tram stop in Piccadilly.

“Patrols were already in the area, however there was no trace of any such male. At no point was the male acting inappropriately and no other members of the public have reported any inappropriate behaviour.”

In May, a man hoping to take part in the Canterbury leg of the World Naked Bike Ride was told to put his trousers back on and leave the event before it began. A witness said: “It looked like he was enjoying the event a bit too much.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

How do we even know he was a cyclist without a bike? Maybe just back from the gym with no pockets for his water bottle?

Perhaps in this era of equality, the man should make a complaint about the woman staring at his groin?  Anyhow, I wonder if the plod have stopped looking for him yet, or are they now conducting house to house enquiries looking for men with a raging tumescence, afterall they're always superkeen to track down cyclists who break the law?

I didn't realise that having an erection in a public place but still covered by your clothes was a criminal offence. Unless he gave himself one with the intention of causing offence to others... Can anyone confirm this?

Reading the GMP tweets its not clear it was a cyclist.

"male in his 50s wearing Lycra cycling shorts"

Non mention of him being on a bike.

"looks like he’s cycled off" is just speculation.

I don't think you sniggering rapscallions realise how disturbing such an event could be to an old lady of fragile disposition. Why, she could of had a stroke....

...if she had been able to reach out before he cycled off.

Is it an offence? A bone of contention, imo.

He deserves a stiff penalty but I fear it will never stand up in court 1

Yep, they seem noticeably hard up. It's normal. As the year ages, hot news tends to be slower and slower to come. But they definitely do look overeager to make do with the manufactured stuff, clearly. Holding your ink for the real action gets you better bang for your buck, to put it bluntly.

C'mon folks, a story like this is prime for a bit of traditional innuendo which is fortunately what the majority have managed to do

Frankly I find the whole thing a bit hard to swallow
