Police appeal after cyclist killed in Bedfordshire

Incident took place on the A421

Police are appealing for witness after a cyclist was killed following a road traffic collision on the A421 near Bedford.

The man is believed to have been cycling along the A421 westbound between the junctions for the A600 and the A6 this morning (Tuesday) when he was struck by another vehicle. Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours while police attended and an investigation is underway.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant John Poppleton of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit on 101, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

It was pitch black and raining hard just after 6am yesterday. My wife and I were on the road by car heading towards Heathrow for an early flight from Bedford - we were on the A421 Westbound, between Cardington and the A6 turnoff. We must've only missed what happened by a couple of minutes - the Police were in attendance already but there were only about 3 cars in front of us stopped by the road closure.

For sure it is a horrible piece of road at the best of times, there is no way I'd cycle on it in broad daylight. So far the details of what happened are unknown but thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

It wouldvery much depend on what end of that stretch you are referring. At Elstow and Cardington end there are housing estates to largely avoid but that may also involve using the equally useless A428. There's also plenty of businesses on the A421 that may have been an arrival to or departure from.

If it was Renhold/ Gt Barford there aren't many roads around it.

I think a more worthy question is why the police require witnesses, is this another leaving the scene or just to co-oberate? "Shouldn't be on the road" is never a reason for a cyclists death!

RIP

I think it's best to find out what actually happened before guessing.

Read the report. Between the A600 and A6.

For some reason, for a reasonably new bit of road, it seems quite narrow. Narrower than the sections before and after the 2 junctions where it happened.

I've ridden on there, but not sure why someone would choose too when there are options. Obviously, we don't know where the rider was coming from, but if they joined at the A600 junction there are better (AKA perceptively safer) options.

That is a fast and dangerous road. I drive it often but would never cycle along it. Yesterday the conditions were attrocious which just made it even more dangerous. There are alternative safer routes for cyclists so i cannot really understand why someone would take the risk & ride on this road.
