Belgian rider Dimitri De Fauw commits suicide

2006 Ghent track accident may have claimed its second victim

Dimitri De Fauw the Belgian six day track specialist is reported to have commited suicide. The 28-year old rider had suffered from depression following an accident at the Six Days of Ghent in 2006 when a collision involving himself and the Spanish rider Isaac Galvez resulted in the Spaniard's death.

De Fauw was a gifted track specialist who won a number of Belgian track titles and as recently as this Wednesday he finished 7th in the Six Days of Grenoble with the Dane Marc Hester. De Fauw also had a career on the road, wearing the Quick-Step jersey from 2003-05. In 2006, he joined Chocolats Jacques.

Former colleagues and rivals mourned his passing on Twitter. Australian Michael Rogers of Columbia-HTC said "Sorry to hear about Dimitri De Fauw. I rode a year with him in Quickstep. RIP Dimitri", while Bradley Wiggins tweeted, "RIP Dimitri De Fauw, Top Fella! so sad."
