The Black Legend Sportive

Cyclists from across the region will soon have the chance to attempt their own ‘Tour de Berkshire’ with the announcement of a new cycling event coming to Hungerford. The inaugural Black Legend cycling Sportive is now open for entries. Grab your Lycra, dust off those saddles and head to the start line on Sunday 22 March 2015 and take on a truly spectacular route across the Berkshire countryside, which passes through Lambourne and the Marlborough Downs.

With 45, 65 and 80 mile routes available the event is open to entrants of all cycling ability and provides the perfect opportunity to explore The Downs including the infamous Combe Gibbet. The Black Legend is the tale of forbidden love, passion and murder, played out on top of the highest and most sacred hill on the Wiltshire Berkshire border. The Sportive will take you up this very same hill.

Following the success of the Tour de Yorkshire and the increase in cycling across the nation, it seemed fitting for us to add a Sportive to our growing event portfolio. Whether you’re an established race cyclist or looking for your first event to try, The Black Legend offers a route that is both challenging and enjoyable to ride. We look forward to seeing you all on race day.”

Starting at 08.00 on Sunday 22 March, the Black Legend will be chip timed and all finishers will receive an innovative hangman-style medal. Entry fees range from £25 - £29.

With an impressive historic backdrop, it’s a race not to be missed next Spring. Erected in the 17th Century, the Combe Gibbet marks the execution site of farm labourer, George Broomham and his mistress Dorothy who were caught murdering the former’s wife and son in the heart of The Downs. The Black Legend was the 1948 film which brought the crime to the big screen.
