Australia's new PM breaks off bike ride to help injured rider

Keen cyclist steps into breach as doctor friends missing from cycle club outing

Australia's new Prime Minister surprised a fellow cyclist this week by leaping off his bike to her aid while out riding with friends.

Tony Abbott was in full lycra on a training ride with a group of friends when he spotted the woman in her 20s on the ground in Anzac Parade, North Sydney.

One of his ride buddies, Byron Koster, a lawyer, told News.com.au that the Prime Minister had attracted some attention from others who had stopped to help.

"When Tony stopped and just checked and offered assistance, there was one guy who kind of realised it was Tony and ... he kind of found it interesting, he thought it was novel," he said.

However the fallen cyclist was perhaps denied the best possible care, given that the group's regular quotient of doctors were not riding that day.

"Our skill base was lower than usual," Mr Koster said.

"When (fellow cyclists) realise it's the Prime Minister they're usually quite amused and sometimes they join in with us for a little while," Mr Koster said.

"It gives people a bit of a kick."

The woman was not thought to be seriously injured.

WHY? I would always stop and/or ask wether they needed help it's what you do.

When you're on your bike you're a cyclist first and last.
