US cyclocross rider Amy Dombroski killed by lorry while training in Belgium

Cyclocross rider was being moto-paced when fatal incident took place

Amy Dombroski, the American cyclocross rider, has been killed after being struck by a lorry while out on a training ride in Belgium.

The 26-year-old, originally from Vermont, was being paced behind a scooter when the collision happened at around 4pm yesterday afternoon.

According to her Young Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team, the rider of the scooter was uninjured in the incident, which happened near Sint-Katelijne-Waver.

Based in Colorado for much of the year, Amy had ridden in Europe for several years and prior to joining Young Telenet-Fidea had been sponsored by Crank Brothers.

Last weekend, she was in Massachusetts where she competed in the Gran Prix of Gloucester.  She flew back to Europe for her team presentation on Tuesday.

In 2012/13, she placed 11th in the UCI World Cyclocross Championships in Louisville Kentucky.

She finished the season in 16th place in the world rankings – the only American ranked above her being world number one, Katie Compton.

So sad, so unnecessary.

Like every road death reported on here, this cuts like a knife.

RIP Amy.

Such sad news today, she was a great character.

It just proves, wherever, however or whatever you ride. Nobody is 100% safe out there. Always take the most care you can of yourself and others you ride with 2

It was with some joy I read in Amy's own words, this story today. Because of things that didn't happen, she got to be home with her family only last month and by the sounds of it, spent some quality time with them. While its sad that anyone dies. She was doing what she loved and had recently spent some time with her family.
