Bloody Car Drivers!

So how many of these drivers are going to get prosecuted for dangerous driving?
Drive to the conditions!!!! don't get too close, leave a gap etc etc.
How much tax payers money is going to be spent bailing out the ****wits again!!
At least they used incident in the byline, driver negligence on a massive scale!

Well we all understand the importance about road safety, especially in reference to vulnerable road users. I also agree with comments about lack of prosecution etc - (so perhaps thread should be entitled 'bloody police'!)
However I don't think this incident, with no cyclists involved, in difficult driving conditions, merits any 'them and us' type attitude
I'm a car driver and a cyclist. Driving a car is inherently dangerous. I am sure I've made mistakes re speed, attention etc. and as a human I am fallible, I have made mistakes whilst cycling and driving. I am very careful around cyclists, however.
When non-cycling drivers have a go at 'bloody cyclists', it's just as bad as the other way around and there is enough contempt between different groups of road users as it is
the point is that such incidents are treated as an unfortunate occurrence, rarely is it actually taken seriously. Luckily no one was killed, but how may more "accidents" will be tolerated before the police actually take driving offences seriously.
c1800 died on the roads last year, 500 were murdered, can you imagine the uproar if the police said they weren't going to bother investigating, and the cps weren't going to bother prosecuting?
Yet the police openly say they won't bother with 20mph limits, Devon & Cornwall scrap their traffic unit.
We allow drivers as many tests as it takes and then never bother retesting, any workplace would expect you to take refreshers, retests etc before letting you use a forklift or some other machine.
And what is even worse so many people are afraid to walk and cycle the streets because of drivers. You have to ask, are roads actually safer or is more the case that vulnerable users have been scared off!
Mrmo, I don't get the point of this thread. 'bloody car drivers' have a 'bloody big accident'. No cyclists hurt. We hate to be branded 'bloody cyclists', when our only common denominator is our mode of transport, so why further the whole phoney 'them and us' war with this thread?
I think its to point out that when a car crashes into us its always our fault and they are never to blame but this article shows the complete opposite about car drivers.
If someone is driving too close behind me, I tend to leave a bigger gap in front so I don't have to brake hard should something happen. But then someone pulls into the gap ...
Cyclists putting drivers heads on stake for no apparent reason. Accidents happen, let it be.

Ah- the elite Road.cc Crash Investigation Team out again! Rather than jump to assumptions, all we know is over 100 cars were involved-that means there were over a hundred factors! Taking my drive on the M1 here in NI the past couple of days with heavy rain and reduced visibility making it dangerous as an example- many drivers were going too fast for conditions; many had no lights or only sidelights on; many were carrying out last minute manoeuvers with no indicators; many were driving safely. Thankfully there were no major accidents just a few close calls, but if there had been it would have been a combination of all these factors rather than just one. So basically what I am saying is the incident above is probably no different- some were probably going too fast for conditions, some didn't have the brains to turn on their lights, some driving too close...and many doing a combination of all, rather than trying to boil it down to a simple single reason- after all, you could be keeping your speed down and your distance from the car in front, but if some bollox smashes into you from behind, it would be a reminder than no matter how safely you drive or cycle and what precautions you take, you are still reliant on others not being eejits.
Very well said. A lot of the vehicles did stop snd were not committing any offences unfortunately there were others who smashed into them who were driving like knackers.
I'm still not seeing any evidence of anyone driving in excess of the speed limit.
How do you know they were driving above the speed limit?
[[[[ One of the drivers, a woman, admitted on TV interview, that she had been "driving too fast". There's a legal limit, and there's a sensible limit in fog. I drove into a wall of fog on the A3 a while back (visibility 30 yards), slowed to 40mph for a mile or two--still too fast--- and drivers were charging past me in the fast lane at 70....couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Nearly every driver, over 90% of motorists at least, drives too fast at some point, and some of them will be cyclists too. When caught, there should rightly be consequences, but sorting out who caused this mess will be very difficult, not least because any eye witness statements are compromised because of the fog.
Chill out and let it be - hopefully the drivers involved have learned a valuable (and in some case, costly) lesson - and from now on will slow down in such conditions.
Chill out - why do cyclists have to comment on every road incident, even ones where no bicycles are involved?
Because the sort of driving that leads people to believe they are invincible when they drive into fog above the speed limit makes you wonder how much they really care about their own lives and those of other road users.
