Tenerife help
Planning a li'l training camp in Tenerife next feb, looking to stay at the Pandoras Canadas hotel (2,200m).
Any advice on flights, where to go from the UK and how to get to the hotel from [one of] Tenerife's airports.
Also just does anyone have any experience of cycling on the Island?

Less harmful citrus degreaser is easy to find at £8 or less for 5 litres. Works ok for me, even diluted up to 4:1. Both paraffin and white spirit...

Nope, it's to keep your straps down and quieter. Plus most sunglasses are polycarbonate and aren't going to shatter like glass anyway

Agreed, there is an argument for leaving bikes unpackaged so the baggage handlers can see what it is, and take more care with it, and there's plenty of evidence for that method working!
Personally though I'd be more comfortable knowing my bike was protected!
In stark contrast I just flew back from Warsaw with mine.
I rode to the terminal, unlatched the saddle bag, finished off the water in the bottles (and then reinserted them into the cages) turned and twisted the handlebars, took off the pedals and gave it to the baggage dude.
I got it back 6 hours later with flat tyres (they had let the air out themselves), both bottles still in cages and everything else the way I had left it.
reattached, straightened and rode away from the terminal with a smile on my face.
that was lufthansa - who because I didnt take any more luggage other than the saddlebag and bike didnt charge any extra for it either!
If you're flying with easyjet there's no limit on the weight of a bike, and the cost of adding a bike as hold luggage isn't that much more than a standard bag IIRC.
A group of 8 of us from my cycling club all flew out to Spain, from different airports in the UK in january with easyjet and no one had a problem with bikes. I rented a Polaris bike box from my LBS which was about £30 and seemed like it would protect my bike from most things.
I have flown with Easyjet to Mallorca and brought my bike (Giant Advanced SL ISP) the past two years.
We assume the baggage handlers know what's inside and due to the size it's harder to throw about like a normal suitcase.
I hired a bike box last year and still couldn't settle for fear of damage to my bike.
This year I packed it into a cardboard box - the type all new bikes travel halfway round the world in!! - and my bike was fine.
You should be able to pick one up from your LBS and recycle it when you return home.
PS. Bring a roll of tape with you to secure the box for the return journey.

You can - weighs 11.2 kilos so if you have a carrier with a 20 kg max before £20 per kilo excess - your bike better be cracking towards UCI legal weight and be prepared to take kit, pumps etc in other luggage....
BBA won 2009 best bike box which suggests that things have moved on a tad......I've also heard talk that the "bullet proof" construction may be a negative in terms of aircraft packing as it looks like a "solid base" for other luggage i.e. it's solid so put it at the bottom of the pile and the bike is safe but the box gets the damage (which at £400 a go is not inconsiderable)
Personally, if I had the money for excess baggage, storage space at home etc I'd have one but was quite satisfied with my alternative....
Sorry to piggyback on your post, but I'd also be interested to hear of others experience of taking their bike on holiday when going by airplane. I'm starting to think about a trip to France next year to take in a couple of the tdf climbs but not sure if fly or drive is the best option? Not sure I can handle Driving that far!

It's a trade off basically
Went to Sardinia last year and it cost £50 each way for the bike bag up to 20 kg which I managed to stay under - above that it was £20 per kilo - I own a good bike bag, the sort that I didn't fret whatsoever about the handling during the flight but that's £400 - and at the other end you better be sure that the car you hire will fit the bike bag in or check with the transfer provider that they will take the bike (apparently becoming an issue in Majorca with coach transfers)
Have driven down to the Alps often and you don't need a bike bag but the toll charges add up (approx £100 each way) as does the fuel and an overnight is best advised which even in a cheap chain is £40 a night
Depending where you are intending to go in France I'd seriously consider Eurostar and TGV trains as you may still need a bike bag but an aircraft hold safe quality bag won't be required - I've certainly found prices from London to Grenoble return for £130 per person

I feel guilty putting a jokey reply when no one else has an answer/bump. Perhaps repost something asking about flying with your bike, perhaps Tenerife is too specific. I would be interested to see any replies as I would like to go to Morocco.
