Soft bike bag on a plane - any experiences?

Off to Ireland soon and I was going to take my steel road bike in my soft Carradice bike bag. However I may instead have to take my carbon bike - I'd put loads of padding in but is it wise to take a carbon bike on a plane in a soft bag?

Cheers London Player and Alston. I've got wheel bags that cover the rims and the cardboard and beach towels is a good idea.

I flew to Portugal with my bike in a bag. Generally, everything went well. I made the mistake of throwing my foot pump in next to the frame and the frame got a bit scratched.

I wrapped everything up in beach towels which helped. I also used a cardboard box around the whole thing.

Buy wheel bags for the wheels is the only difference I would have changed.

I just got the Chain reactions case to fly to Hong Kong.
I got a cardboard box from my local store, cut up the sides and placed them in the bag for better rigidity.
When i got there nothing was broken.

Thanks for the comments. Mine is Cordura material with no padding but I was intending to use pipe cladding, lots of foam and cardboard. What's the worst that could happen!? 39

I'd get a cardboard box and some padding from your local bike shop. It'll be free and gives way more protection. You can do the same heading back, there are lots of bike shops in Dublin city centre, if that's where you're heading..
