Combativity Award

Why do they always give the combativity award to a guy who breaks away at the start of the race (when the peloton couldn't give two hoots), rather than the guy who takes the race by the scruff of the neck and attacks the peloton with real guts within 6km's to go?

Surely Chavanel was more 'combative' than Arashiro today??

It's the one who shows the most fighting spirit, you can argue that by going for the stage win riders like Chavanel are more aggresive but you need real fighting spirit to try and sustain a break for as long as possible and try and keep the inevitable at bay.

The prize is so subjective though that you could easily argue that by just completing the stage riders like LL Sanchez, Tony Martin and Tom Danielson have shown more fighting spirit than the rest of the peloton just to keep going.

Whatever the prize is called though it's pretty much guaranteed that, except for in exceptional circumstances, the breakaway will get it.

Quite nice to see Mate and Pineau fighting it out today to be the 'Last Man Standing'! 1
