Crank/BB Grinding problem!

Hi all,

I have a Bianchi Via Nirone 7, its about a year old but in great condition. I was out recently and going up hill out of the saddle, the crank bottom bracket started to creak and grind. I sat down and cycled home in my easiest gear. The pedals now have ton's of movement in them and its unrideable. Anyone know what this is? And can advise on how much it'll cost to repair, think the cranks FSA?

Cheers in advance

Hi,
You probably have an FSA Tempo chainset which, as you say both cranks have play, is probably on a square drive bottom bracket. Take your cranks off clean them off. Hopefully you haven't done any serious damage to the joint interface. Check the BB to see if it feels worn or gritty. If all OK: Apply a little jointing compound (not grease) to the bottom bracket axle and refit your cranks to the correct torque loading (35-40Nm.

I can't give you an answer in regards to cost, but my mate had a very similar issue with the same bike.

He had lots of lateral play in the cranks, and the BB had to be 're-assembled' according to the mechanic. (no new parts needed, just not put together properly). Seeing as the bike was almost brand new, there was no charge.

Hope this helps, good luck with the fix.

Bottom bracket is knackered. Replacement is easy only if you have the right tools; replacement cost will depend on the type/quality of the new bottom bracket. Would suggest a sealed one and spend as much as you can/are prepared to afford. One year is no time for a bottom bracket though. Do you pressure wash your bike? This can wash the grease out of the bearings and destroy the bearings?
