brake release lever, shimano caliper question
right, been riding bikes and fixing them for years. whenever im out on club rides some one always has the wheel release lever half way out.
i always run mine right the way round. are they actually ok to run half rotation? i always imagine pulling the lever and it rotating to the release point, taking your brake power away.
is it just my ocd or is it safe or indeed common practice to run it like this? i imagine if you have wheel rub on hill climbs its a quick fix, then rotate it back on the down slope?

yeah campag on one bike, shimano on the other. found the campag weird at first though. although my caliper got knocked out of alignment on a ride with the campag so had to put the lever in the open position and it made it a bit more difficult to brake.
I've seen that too and thought it weird - some people also run it fully 'up' which rather defeats the object.
Personlly I think the Campag system is far better as its a safer system should you forget to reset the QR.
is it safe? yes, so far as i'm aware. on brakes such as shimano units where the release has a ratchet and set positions, you can't pull it round by applying force to the brake lever.
I am not sure with regards safety and breaking power but I know a few riders who run them like this because a wheel is out of true. Other than that I can't think of any other reason to do it.
