Commercial Endorsements

Just out of interest, I wanted to collect all the commercial endorsements cyclists had that weren't to do with cycling brands (eg Shimano, Oakley etc.)

Famously, Victoria Pendleton did that bread thing, but what other ones are there?

Oh, and I just saw Sir Chris on a Gillette advert. 13

Anyone know of any others?

I think it's the BT ads that currently have some swooshy soft-focused cyclists in them in GB kit.

As was pointed out in a comment on the Armstrong Ironman story last week:

"Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

If it’s preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run, it is not called a bike race, it is called duathlon or a triathlon. Neither of which is a bike race. Also keep in mind that one should only swim in order to prevent drowning, and should only run if being chased. And even then, one should only run fast enough to prevent capture."

Several current BC team members being paid to promote Procter & Gamble's petrochemical products, including Pendleton in a rather ridiculous photo for Pantene (http://road.cc/51336).

Geraint promotes Welsh Beef & Lamb as their "Sporting Ambassador" (linky). Should be safer than the Spanish variety, eh Alberto 3

Robert Millar was featured on TV adverts for Kellogg's Start, while the company took over sponsorship of the Tour of Britain, previously known as The Milk Race, which was an advert for, er.... I'm not sure now!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_of_Britain

UK teams with sponsors from outside the sport have come and gone. Persil sponsored the BC Academy a few years ago (great line about 'whiter than white' in this Guardian piece from 2004) while parcel delivery firm ANC co-sponsored a team to enter the Tour de France in 1987. Despite the presence of notable riders like Malcolm Elliot and Shane Sutton the whole experience was such a shambles it was made into a book called Wide Eyed and Legless. Cycling Weekly took a look back at it 20 years on. A couple of years later the Linda McCartney Foods team folded almost the minute it was created. Must have been a dodgy bit of curried veggie sausage the night before 3

Jan Ullrich just signed a deal with a German hair loss prevention product (or something along those lines), touted in the campaign as 'doping for hair.'

Announced the same day last week that his ban from CAS came through. Seriously.
