I'm pretty sure I came to the site as part of a Schwag giveaway...but 1 year and 3 weeks on and I'm still tootling around and 'sticking my oar in'
...sure there will be those who are one post wonders...but probably many more that continue to contribute, albeit with less frequency than others
...not everyone feels at ease posting in fora...because unfortunately there are a lot of 'flamers' about....take youtube for instance.....I feel compelled to let someone know when I think they are being a tool! I can take as well as I can give, but then I'm a fairly opinionated sod!
Some people may go thru the site with a fine toothed comb, but have absolutely no opinion on what is said/reviewed etc...but still like to be part of the online community...lurking/stalking if you like...
Good luck to anyone that is picked out (randomly after all)of the hat..just wish I was that jammie!
oooh. can we get dope on here? Now I'm a bit more interested...
whats the schwag?
Depends on whom you talk to, on the "street" it would be low grade marijuana, but as part of a give-away and as thats what is being done here it means a promotional item/s given to employees, visitor to trade shows, etc..... an informal variant of swag.
@sup dom - if I ever win a pair of their socks I'll let you have one! Would you prefer left or right?
Thanks.
I will have a sniff when I take them off tonight and see which one smells worst and therefore needs replacing
What about weighted voting for the schwag? People with more than 25 comments get 2 entries, people with 100 get 3 etc etc.
That would just lead to people spamming threads and news articles i think, thats why i said the 10 posts, its not hard to achieve without spamming everything
I've lurked about this site for a while and registered today, largely to enter the competition. It's win-win surely for the site? Larger user numbers must help them out, and now I'm registered I'm more likely to post.
Plus I *really* need something vaguely aero in the wheel dept for my S1...
the received wisdom is that for every 100 users a website has, there will be ten who will be contributors (in the sense of commenting on existing material) and one who's a creator (generating new content)
there's plenty of new people on the site after a set of wheels, about 10% of the entrants. common sense suggests that a lot of them are interested in cycling, and reading the long lists of bikes they own when we approve the accounts confirms that.
so yeah, one of them might walk away with the prize. c'est la vie. one of the main reasons we do schwag grabs is to attract new users, and turn lurkers into registered users. who knows? some of those new people might be the backbone of the userbase in a year's time.
Yeah, and it obviously works. I got a friend so sign up after his eyes almost popped out of his head (as mine DID) when I showed him the schwag grab.
Besides, the odds of winning is still alot bigger than the euromillions!
I think its great.. You guys are nuts!
Richey wheels here.. and Ritchey wheels there..
So i was almost spot on when i said, I'd just like to see, even 10% stick around, I only started the thread to see if you had a number you were willing to share of new registrations since the Schwag went live
But it seems to have sparked some more discussion, so thats always good aswell, shame my Welcome to the site didn't
I must admit I was used to using a forum in the full sense of the term, commenting and posting regularly so when I came to this site I was not really 'on the ball' for comments on news items/reviews as well as the forum.
That has changed, although keeping up across the board (so to speak) doesn't always happen on my part, but that is time/busy schedule for you.
That said, when I recently asked about there ever being a Road.cc magazine it was pointed out this whole site is like an ever changing mag itself - so, in reality, any mag will have lots of readers, many of which enter comps, but few write/email in for the letters (for letters read comments) page!
Congrats in advance to whoever wins the wheels - just hope its me!!!!
Isn't this how the Nazis started?
Let's start by removing those who don't understand the difference between your and you're.
And so the plan unfolds
Interaction begins and starts conversation's and people start to give their opinion's, starting dialogue on the forum and thus increasing activity
I rarely post anything on the forum, mainly as I don't think most things I'd say would be of interest to other people. However I have used the forum for advice in the past and it's been very useful.
I visit the site on a more than daily basis and read pretty much everything which is posted, and occasionally even click on adverts on the site. Does a low forum post count mean I shouldn't be eligible for Schwag? Of course not, the site provides different functions for different people, all of which are equally valid.
Incidentally, I did win a Schwag when I had about 5 posts...
Having never won anything in my life and not particularly expecting that to change, rest assured that I'm on here for the craick!
I agree. And sometimes, I don't even bother entering schwag contests. Though I might enter the latest if its still open...but what would I do with a wheelset? I already have two and they roll true.
If you win them, you can always donate them to me lol!
Oh come on guys, get real. More members make promotions a more attractive proposition to sponsors and advertisers. We should be welcoming in new members however they come to the site.
Doesn't mean I don't want to win the wheels myself though!
More ACTIVE members makes the site attractive to sponsors and advertisers. Yes
But having a user base of say for example 10k but only 1.5k above 25 posts, then that works against the principle of attracting people to the site (in my eyes)
I'm welcoming ALL users with open arms, see here http://road.cc/content/forum/49857-welcome-and-hello-all-new-guys
I'd just like to see them become more active, giving the site a more users who contribute rather than just coming along ever so often for the freebies, yes EVERYONE wants to win something, even if its just a pair of socks, but i don't want to see Road.cc losing out to a whole host of users who just wait for the Schwag email, come leave a comment and then disappear until the next email
Yeah its all good raise the profile and getting traffic here, but if they don't stick around after their one post and when the Schwag ends, then its a pointless exercise, might aswell just give themselves the wheels and save the hassle
Its now upto 1120 comments, now i've only see a max of around 650-700 comments before on any Schwag, so its bringing traffic in, thats for certain, I'd just like to see, even 10% stick around, There was something like 3000-4000 players in the fantasy game last year, but only a handful of people posting comments in the forum, Now i know its be said by the guys running this site, that the forum isn't the be all and end all of the site, but personally, i'd like to see the amount of users who come and post, even once a week rising this year with the fantasy game. It adds a little something extra to the game when people are commenting on tactics and riders throughout the races, rather than just coming on, picking a team and then coming back the next day to see points and making transfers.
I would just like to see some more people getting involved with the forum side and the "banter" we were all having
I had similar thoughts myself earlier as to how many new people would be piling in to enter but I'm sure Road.cc intended it to be this way in order to raise their profile and raise the traffic coming towards this site.
No No, at least 10 times that much, so over 1830 posts
I know i raised this issue before, but if there was a 10 post minimum, it MIGHT encourage people to get involved with news stories and forum posts to be able to enter the Schwag's without being overly off putting.
I just dont like the idea that someone can register today, post once in a Schwag and walk away with £1175 worth of wheelset or anything else for that matter (a pair of socks) and not have bothered to be part of the site
The site means different things to different people.
You can't measure being "part of the site" on postings.
I visit the site at least once per day, do the fantasy cycling, post up events, am doing the MCC, etc, but I seldom post on a forum.
True they should simplify the schwag and limit it to members with 183 posts.
