Cost-cutting bicycle ban for Cambridge posties

Unions slam Royal Mail’s “short-sighted” plan

Postal workers could be banned from using bikes in a cost-cutting exercise, according to a story in The Mirror today.

Unions say Royal Mail is considering switching 100 cyclists in Cambridge to vans to cut 15 out of 200 jobs, according to the story.

The Communication Workers Union called Royal Mail short-sighted with spokesman Steve Butts saying: "The cuts require about 50 additional vans. Where's the sense? It does not sit well with Royal Mail's green credentials."

Green councillor Margaret Wright added they should set an example for other congested cities.

Royal Mail said: "Any changes will be discussed with our people first but we will continue to use a range of vehicles."
