Amber Halliday well enough to leave hospital soon

Amber Halliday, the Australian Olympic rower turned cyclist who was critically injured in a racing crash in Adelaide last month, should be well enough to leave hospital there within days.

Amber sustained severe head and other injuries when she fell after clipping another rider’s wheel, suffering bleeding on the brain, a damaged eye socket and a broken arm in the Tour Down Under support race.

Cycling South Australia executive director Max Stevens told ABC News that the rider is in good spirits and able to hold brief conversations.

"She's laughing and carrying on, but it drifts away. I don't want people to think she's bouncing around the hospital bed," he said.

"She spends most of her day sleeping, but when she is talking she is the Amber that we know."

Mr Stevens said a decision on the rider's rehabilitation would be made soon.

"It's a matter of doctors looking at exactly what fits Amber's condition... but there's no question she will be moving out of the [Royal] Adelaide Hospital within the next week."
