What are you listening to this week?

Opeth's Blackwater Park, love how The Funeral Portrait goes from oh so delicate to that big fat slab of a riff. The whole album is fantastic. Alternating with The Essential Rory Gallagher brilliant slide guitar.

I'm loving a bit of jazz at the mo - Billie Holiday and Chet Baker are the true classics.

Christy Moore - went to London Town to see him last Saturday. Also a lot of US alt country stuff, Ryan Adams. Whiskeytown, Josh Rouse, Pernice Bros, Remy Zero, Clem Snide etc.

Great not being at work but minor injury means I have even more time at home.

I've been mostly listening to the Jim Bryson and the Weakerthans collaberation cd 'The Falcon Lake Incident', which is very very good. If you didn't know already, The Weakerthans are fronted by John K Sampson, previously of punk band Propagandhi, but now he plays folk rock. Check them out here:

JIM BRYSON & THE WEAKERTHANS - Freeways in the Frontyard from Mitch Fillion (southernsouls.ca) on Vimeo.

and here for samples on amazon:

And also the mighty !!!, this being their latest video:

Led Zep - loud on the way to the Endura at Sherwood Pines last Sunday. I always think a bit of rock puts you in the mood for mtb and maybe Neil Young for road riding.

Simon E if you have not heard Joe Bonamassa strongly recommend him he will fit in right next to Jeff Healey.

Sloe Gin is a good album to start.

^ Glutton for punishment, F&C, you're a braver man than me.

Before the power cut stopped me in my tracks last night I was once again dipping into my the RealPlayer stuff saved on my PC - Back in Black era AC/DC, Soweto String Quartet's Mbube and, scoring a perfect 10 every time, Jeff Healey's version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Looking at the above perhaps I ought to check Last.fm and try something new.

Lots of Motorhead this week, going to see them next month in Wolves. With a smattering of Joe Bonamassa and some Punk/New Wave in the mix as well.

Driving home from work - traffic jam so I put the radio on for relaxing music as I was running late...

On Radio: "I don't want to live forever..."

Headbanging in traffic jam! 21

Monday I had some Maria Callas on as background, Tuesday's Eurostar to Paris accompanied by a French rap compilation (Patrimoine du Ghetto) to get me in suitable mood for the media-predicted burning cars and rioters - not that there was any sign of that on the Champs Elysees - and yesterday had 1980s mixtape on the TV which promptly got switched over the second the missus came home. In more of an old school punk mood today...

According to Last.fm the artists I've listened to most over the last week have been Darkstar, Eels, Forest Fire, Arcade Fire and Four Tet, all of which are utterly splendid in their different ways. I recommend the new Darkstar album North to anyone who isn't instantly turned off by the expression melancholy synth pop.

i got a copy of ELP's brain salad surgery for 10p the other week, not the best 10p ive spent to be honest

Good old 'Cumbersome, Fake and Trauma', yep got them too, except they're mostly vinyl and still in pretty good condition. Must get round to putting some of them on.

This weekend plan to transfer the Who and something more modern, Nirvana and Foo Fighters, to the phone to give some variety. Also just downloaded the last Peter Gabriel which is sounding pretty good, or most of it anyway.

Mate just leant me Paul Weller's 22 dreams - went off him in a big way after the Style Council, really can't stand all that "Mod Father" stuff… it's just so un-mod.

Also probably going to be hearing a fair amount of Rilo Kiley cos my elder daughter won't plug her headphones in when she's on the computer.

And this…
