At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Chapeau!'s Club Jersey Logo is a stripped down, simple jersey that gives a slight nod to aerodynamics with its close cut and minimalistic design. Thanks to lightweight materials, it's great for warmer summer rides too, and all at a pretty decent price.

  • Pros: Well balanced fit, stylish design and range of colours
  • Cons: Lack of gripper at the rear

Over the years, many items I've seen and tested called Club are aimed more at the beginner end of the market or those who like to take things a little more leisurely, but not this jersey. It has a lot of attributes of a full-on race jersey but without the lofty price tag.

First up is the cut.

The stretchy fabric used for the sleeves is close fitting and does away with the need for any form of cuff or gripper – for a bit of aero – and it sets the theme for the rest of the jersey.

It feels snug across the shoulders but even if you aren't some single-digit-fat-percentage professional climber, the rest of the jersey flatters as it has a shaped cut but it's not stupidly slim.

The front and rear panels are a wide mesh with a thin Lycra covering on the outside which really lets the air travel through when you are up to speed.

On really hot days the jersey can get a little damp when you're climbing or there is little air about, but once you can generate a bit of a draught you soon cool down and dry up. It isn't limited to really hot days, though; I'd say you're looking at a temperature range of about 15°C up to the high 20s.

As you can see from the pictures, you get a full zip which is smooth to operate. At the top end you don't get a zip garage, something I like to see on a jersey with a high neck to avoid any irritation, but it's no biggy.

The rear sees a nicely dropped tail but it doesn't feature any form of gripper to stop it riding up when you tuck into the drops. It's not a massive issue if you wear bib shorts, but standard shorts might find you becoming exposed at the back.

Pocket-wise, you get three in the traditional setup and they work well. They're deep enough to hold most things and the fabric is taut enough to stop any sagging unless you really overload them.

One thing I do like is that Chapeau! prints the washing and care instructions onto the actual jersey so there is no irritation from any tags – although it can be a little difficult to read.

Priced at £69.99, the Club Jersey Logo is towards the cheaper end of the range of jerseys we've tested, especially when we are talking about this level of performance.

The Craft Monument Jersey I was testing alongside it is a very similar design, which at £85 I considered to be decent value for money. It does have those small details like a silicone gripper at the hem and a zip garage, but hey, it depends how important these things are to you.

Castelli's Flusso Jersey FZ looks to be pretty similar and comes in at £80 or there is the Northwave Blade Air 3 Jersey which scored highly at £56.99 – so you can see there is plenty of competition.

It's also worth taking into account Chapeau!'s crash replacement policy. If you deck it out on a ride and damage the jersey Chapeau! will replace it free of charge, and a quick look through its terms and conditions doesn't seem too stringent either.

I like the Club jersey, and this Logo version comes in a huge amount of options: Black, Cherry (this one), Clear Sky, Deep Ocean, Devon Red, Flint Grey and Haldon. You can also get a striped option or various patterns.

Verdict

A very good race jersey for the non-racer thanks to a slim fit and great performance
