Mason X Hunt 4Season Disc: Suitable for Cyclo-cross/Gravel?

I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Mason X Hunt 4Seasons on a cross bike? I have a Cannondale caadx tiagra and wish to upgrade the heavy maddux wheels it has as stock. Either that are has anyone got any other ideas for sub-£400 sub-1600gm disc wheels that will deal with cross racing? I'm light (<55kg) and not too violent!

I finally dug out an email from Hunt in response to a question about which rim width would be better. Here is the response, I believe it answers your question quite well;

Hi kevvjj,
Thanks for the email and thanks for the interest in Hunt wheels.
There are a couple of wheelsets that spring to mind, but which one to go for would depend on the intended usage.
If you were going to be using the wheels on the road primarily then I would suggest going for the 4Season Disc wheelset, more information about these wheels can be found here:
https://www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road-disc-wheels/products/mas...
If you are going to be using them more on gravel, 'cross or light off-road then I would look at the 4Season Gravel Wheels:
https://www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road-disc-wheels/products/4se...
They are similar in many respects, and share the same hub. However the Gravel wheels are a little wider, and are built using 28 spokes over 24 as found on the 4Season wheels, resulting in a slightly stronger build. You are right in saying that a wider rim will generate a wider tyre too, so this is something worth keeping in mind when deciding on which wheels to go for. If you are going to be using the wheels 95% of the time on the road then the 4Season wheels would, and they are more than strong enough for the occasional bit of 'cross. If you're going to be doing most of the miles on gravel or 'cross then the 4Season Gravel wheels would be the better option.
I hope this is of some help, any further questions then please send them our way.
Kind regards,

You will be fine on the 4-seasons. However, at just 44g more I would go for their Gravel disc wheelset - they are a wider rim (and a few more spokes too) which gives a better tyre profile for cyclocross. I have a set - they are brilliant value for money and they come set up for tubeless (including the valves).

Hi OrangeRidley,

My apologies becasue I don't have persoanl expereince to speak from as I don't own any Hunt Wheels but just in relation to your question Josh Ibbett (who admitadly is I believe a former employee/ brand manager for Hunt) races cyclocross on Hunt Wheels:-

I've ceratinly read lots of good reviews out there and on most forums whenever people raise questions about Hunt Wheels they seem to receive very positive feedback & reviews from people who own them.

I'm sure they'll be people on this forum who have them and will give you feedback.

John
