Warren Barguil’s Bastille Day stage win on Strava

Unsurprisingly, the Tour de France’s current King of the Mountains picked up several KoMs

It’s been a busy couple of days when it comes to eye-catching French wins uploaded to Strava. After Romain Bardet’s 212km slog comes Warren Barguil’s 105km (65-mile) Bastille Day effort, in which he seemed to spend the majority of his time attacking.

The short route meant a more aggressive pace than normal for this kind of terrain. Barguil averaged 37.3km/h (23.2mph) – this despite 2,330m (7,644ft) of vertical gain and spending the majority of his day riding in a small group.

Appropriately enough, considering he’s wearing the polka dot King of the Mountains jersey, Barguil also picked up a few KoMs along the way.

He covered the 5.5km 7% Col de Latrape in 14 minutes when he first set off on his quest for mountain points.

While the 10.1km 8% Col d’Agnes eluded him – instead being snaffled by Michal Kwiatkowski – he was quickest over the main part of the descent, averaging near enough 60km/h.

Technically, he was also briefly KoM for the long climb from Massat to Col de Peguere, as Romain Bardet only snatched it from him a couple of minutes later.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.
