Unboxed: Specialized Tarmac Expert

Specialized's £5,000 Tarmac Expert with SRAM Red eTap wireless shifters

This sleek looking bike is the brand new Specialized Tarmac Expert, a new-for-2017 model with SRAM eTap wireless shifters and a £5,000 price tag. It's just landed in the office but before we hit the road, allow us to take you through the key features in the video above.

We've previously tested the Specialized Tarmac S-Works Disc but this is the first rim brake version of the company's go-to race bike we've had in the office. It's the fifth generation Tarmac and combines a FACT 10r carbon fibre frame with a full carbon fork, internal cable routeing, integrated seat clamp and oversized press fit bottom bracket.

Hanging off the frame are SRAM eTap wireless shifters and mechs, with a non-series crankset and Force brake calipers, so not quite a full RED groupset. Solidly reliable DT Swiss R460 wheels with excellent 24mm wide S-Works Turbo tyres and a full complement of the company's own Body Geometry parts round out the build.

He's a seasoned cyclist of all disciplines, from road to mountain biking, touring to cyclo-cross, he only wishes he had time to ride them all. He's mildly competitive, though he'll never admit it, and is a frequent road racer but is too lazy to do really well.
