Shoes/Pedals - on a budget!
OK so I need to replace the truly awful pedals and toe clip combo that came with my Allez.
Thing is, sorry for going on about it, but I am on a tight budget so any recommendations?
If not, would it look out of place to pick up some of those mks pedals and classic style clips?

Ordered some dbh R1's in black and silver and they arrived this morning. Very pleased with the fit, look and quality for the price. Had a £5 off wiggle voucher too which was great timing!
Pedals arrived yesterday and now I really need to get some shoes lol. Anyone know what Wiggle's dbh R1's are like?
Also how they go size wise as I have heard many times that Shimano sizing is way off.

I've used Wiggle a fair few times including ordering a bike for my dad.
I did use Merlin a few times but they sent me some dodgy tyres and would not replace them and charged me a re-stocking fee too so I fell out with them over that!
CRC I ordered one tyre from in the past for my mtb and now the pedals. They emailed today to say they have been disptached so hope they arrive soon.
I've been quite lucky as the shops in Bristol and Bath are good at price matching!
If's within a couple of quid of online price I would prefer to buy LBS as I know warranty will not need me to post things.
I'm moving in 3 months to where I grew up for a year and dreading it as there are no LBS's! but CRC and the internet were a godsend.
Funnily enough it was Evans online that I got the watch from a couple of years back lol.
It's an age thing.
The older you get the less you care, and of course a buyers market.
But I've probably spent more than I saved on the shoes at Evans since and as it's on the way to taking the wife to work they'll gain in the long run.
Thanks. Very happy with the bike tbh. I noticed a slight wobble from the rear wheel (ie not true) so called the shop this morning and they said pop round. So it was all sorted within 10 mins plus it was a decent 20 minute ride there and back.
The pedals I will order this week. Finding shoes will be harder as I haven't got loads to spend and all the 'cheap' ones are either online (I'd rather try them on) or in tiny sizes.
When I was looking for a pair of shoes I found out who stocked the ones I wanted to buy on-line and went and tried them on at the nearest stockist. Good thing too.
I normally take size 11 but ended up with a size 13 all courtesy of my local Evans.
I have been back and bought other things since to salve my conscience though.
Brave man admitting that. I am sure many do it as well but I got torn to shreds on one cycling forum for saying I did that with my watch! However it was half price online and the shop would not budge on price.
Good choice as long as you don't have to keep unclipping all the time.
For fun training rides you picked the right bike and pedals. You can always upgrade later once you have more cash and hooked by the bike bug.
I use proper road shoes and clips -stops feet going numb etc and get the shop to help you set it up etc.
SPD-mtb pedals can work on a roadbike but you want really stiff shoes to stop hotspots. I use xtr spds on my winter road bike and when commuting through the city with mtb/touring shoes so I walk to the cafe through Bath.
Just practice clipping in/out with the bike over the sofa as much as poss before shooting out. IT will become 2nd nature if you never have used clipped pedals.

What size feet are you?
I've got some Shimano SPDR535 pedals and size 11 Shimano shoes that I'm going to sell as soon as I take the pedals off the bike.
Never got on with them so they have to go... They've just been sat in the house for a few years.
I have never gone wrong with look or shimano ultegra pedals. Really really easy to get in and out of, a good range that if you find you like them you can upgrade. Yeah the cleats arent great to walk in but you should be able to put up with that.
If it's your first set of clipless pedals and you're not going to be racing, i'd go for SPDs or something similar like the Crank Brothers Candys. they're generally a bit cheaper, the shoes are easier to walk in and you don't need to set them up as exactly because there's more float in the system. a touring shoe – something like a shimano RT31 – or even a cheap mtb race show like the MO63 wouldn't look out of place on your allez
Training rides, just not long ones yet! I am just riding for fun/fitness.
What sort of mileage will you be doing and what type of riding?
City commutes or long training rides?
Don't know how tight your budget is but these Shimano R540 pedals are good with decent bearings which I used through a harsh British winter with no problems.

Shoes worth a trawl around Wiggle Chain Reaction Evans etc see whos got what on offer and what styles you like. If you go with the R540 pedals above you need the shoes to be Shimano Spd SL compatible.
I would avoid Ebay purely on the basis that you might need to return them.
