Video: Stowaway stores bikes on the ceiling

It's a neat idea but with four days of crowd funding left it's only hit a quarter of its €100,000 target...

A cunning bicycle storage solution for small homes has been designed which winches your steed onto the ceiling sideways.

It’s pretty ingenious: the bike, then the wheels are strapped, and then the whole thing winched to the ceiling using a pulley. Its makers claim that, thanks to the counterweight pulley system, you only lift half the bike’s weight.

However, the Kickstarter campaign for the Stowaway bike storage solution only has four left to run – until 8am Christmas day – and at this stage it’s unclear if it will meet its €100,000  goal, as it’s only raised a quarter of that money so far.

It's not a counterweight system, and they don't claim it is. It's a 2:1 pulley system- you pull double the length in order to apply half the force

I want to see what happens when you hang a wet and dirty bike up on the ceiling, to me that's the problem....

It's an interesting idea, but to use it you actually need quite a lot of space so this wouldn't work in a narrow hallway. I made a narrow shelf, put a ring on the wall and use a rope and carabina to hold it in place. You have to lift the bike onto the shelf, but it works and cost about £20.
