safe cycling

I'm in my 60's life time cyclist, do a long run each year, easyjet out and cycle back - san remo italy to york last run.

30 years a policemen, many in traffic and here is my message.

If you cyle on the pavement or jump red lights you give us all a bad name and encourage the idiots who are motorised or pedestrianised who are just waiting to take a pop at us verbally or worse still, carve us up in their cars.

I can't believe that people actually take off or disable braking systems on their bikes - I checked with my son who works for a leading insurance company - don't use the available cycle lane and have an accident, 30% off compensation, ride cycle without brakes and have accident - even if not your fault, up to 60% off compensation - go figure!

Ride safely out there and if you pass someone doing their best, miles from any where ona hybrid rather than a road bike, lower yourself to the smallest nod as you go past - we are all 'cyclists' after all, not just you fast jet boys (and girls)

don't know about riding brakeless but so far as i know all contributory negligence cases citing non-use of an available cycle lane have been thrown out by the courts. because there's no requirement to use a cycle lane. ctc and others fought hard for that one

dosnt stop insurance companies automatically offering you less. Many people involved in minor accidents cant be bothered with the hassle of taking the other party to court to get their money (or might not even know they are being short changed!)
