Winter Training!!

A missed opportunity!

I have been on an extended Christmas break from work (11th Dec '09 to 11th Jan '10), it was my intention to seize this opportunity and get some serious road riding in.

Having returned to Road cycling in June after 17 or so years of the bike I though this would be a perfect time to increase my fitness to the next level. But then the 'Big Freeze' set in!!

As the first week passed me by the icy conditions remained, at the start of week two I had had enough and invested in a Turbo Trainer and started getting the miles in.

One New Years day I did my first 10 mile TT with Peterborough Cycling Club & haven't got out on the road since. You can view my training log here http://www.mapmyfitness.com/user_training?u=787124829296675090 .

All in I have been really disapointed with the weather (but then haven't we all?), but I am really pleased to have squeezed in a fair few miles on the new Turbo & chuffed to have got my first TT under my belt.

These stories are making me unsure of getting a border collie, am planning on getting one to drag me out running in all weathers!

Anyone in this area going to do the tt's that Fringe spoke about last summer, near clevedon. 10 tt, I did 28minutes (having made a wrong turn and coasting the last km or two because I didnt know the way...amateur!!!)

On the note of turbo, I have been forced off mine................ can anyone beat this............ no problem getting past Mrs Si, no problem with the neighbours but our "new" puppie will not have it! barking and generally going mad, have tried everything but she will not have it!.......... extra spin class maybe?

I had very similar; my new rescue dog, a Patterdale, is certifiable. He races round me on the turbo, and keeps looking like he is about to stick his head through the spokes! On the rollers he is worse, and tries to get in between the front and rear rollers, which I must say I find a tad off putting...

The simple answer I found was just to close him out, turn up the music and drown out his whining.

I mananged a set of 2x20's at 280w on Saturday, so things aren't as bad as I thought! I'll build back up to 300w over the next 2 or 3 sessions hopefully.

Hmmm.... Not really sure what to suggest! I always worry that my dog will get his tail caught in the spinning wheel or something! He is always lurking around when I am on it, the nosey sod!

I haven't been out for several weeks now. The week before Christmas I got swine flu, and have only just started a return to training in the last 7 days.

I have clocked up about 12 hours turbo time, and have been using the time to build on my zone 2 work. I'm feeling ready to start on some 2 x 20's this weekend, but fear my power will be well down. I was doing 2 x 20's at 300w before, so I am scared to see what I am capable of now. I'll maybe kick off at 280w and see how that goes, though if that is too hard I'll be devastated!

It wasn't a good time at all (34.50) but well pleased to be back at it, haven't done a TT for approx 17 years. I am nearly 36 now and was 3 stone heavier than in my younger days!
Just going to keep pushing on with the training and see if I can get some strength back in my legs. On the Turbo as I write this (Friday night at 8.15), hoping to get out an the mountain bike tomorrow as well.
