Alternative to Garmin speed/cadence ANT+ thing?

Could have sworn there was a topic about this already, but alas the search function isn't up to much.

Anyway! Looking for an alternative for a new speed/cadence sensor (were they always 45 quid?!) to Garmin's. Anyone found anything good?

An alternative is the Decathlon sensor http://www.decathlon.co.uk/ant-speed-rate-sensor-id_8181211.html £16.99.

Do you *really* need to know your cadence? This thing seems a bit odd to me.

You're getting your speed from the GPS, so you're effectively paying 45 quid to know how fast your legs are spinning. Which you probably know to the extent that you need to know (i.e. about 90 now, about 70 back there on that hill, etc).

just a thought...!!

(FWIW I use a PowerTap so I do have both of these readings from other sources..!)

It's a good guide. Your perceived cadence can change depending on fatigue, gradient, wind, etc etc. Those of us who haven't yet plunged for some sort of power metering need/want everything we can to get an accurate guide on the effort we're putting out. So with HR strap, cadence, speed, lungs and legs all telling me things, I reckon I've got a good idea of it all.

The Decathlon one is lovely and cheap, but the wire puts me right off. Ugly thing.

Cool cool, thanks for all the advice. I'm slightly turned off the Garmin unit since one of mine broke, but hey, I'm a sucker for a bargain.

I've got a Giant one as it happens, works fine, use it with the usual garmin headunit or a Suunto usb doofer for Peri Pedal fun… but that's another story.

As above, £30 on Amazon.

Garmin Speed/Cadence Sensor For Garmin Forerunner/Edge/Virb Elite/Montana/Oregon by Garmin http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BFNOT8/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_UA1jtb0SW54QT

Worth noting that DCRainmaker recommends the Bontrager Quick Release ANT+ Sensor.

The Garmin GSC10 is £30 on amazon at the moment if that helps?

If not, then any other ANT+ speed and cadence sensor should work. Off the top of my head there's a Bontrager one out there but there must be others about.

DC Rainmaker's blog is always a good place to look for reviews of anything bike tech related
