Gopro or Garmin Virb

im confused! i simply want a camera for when im out and about on my road bike but cant decide between a Gopro ( any version) or Garmin Virb (any version). i just need something easy to use with a good enough picture to play back just for a bit of fun. anyone got any opinion on which one to go for and which version?

Be careful i have just bought the Garmin Virb under the impression that it connects to ANT+ but that is only the Virb Elite the web site gave my the impression that they both did this!! and the later also does gps etc 40

I've got a GoPro and a Contour.

The sound on the Contour is better I reckon, and it fogs up less.

GoPro is probably easier to mount, but not very aero.

I'm interested in the Garmin as it has the ANT+. So you can pair it with your GPS and HR to give on screen data. Useful to give some perspective on what you're doing - but maybe you also don't want to know....

Go check out DC Rainmaker's website for some incredibly detailed reviews of the Vrib with comparisons with the GoPro and other cameras on the market.

Nilox, less money for the same results. I read that you should use 30fps for filming on mtb rides to sustain the quality. I use mine at 60fps and I don't have any issues. I have the Nilox Ducati which comes with Remote, LCD screen, waterproof case and various sticky mounts. I bought the Helmet mount which was £19.99. The Camera should be £270, MY local shop did mine with the mount for £235.

Do you want to record rides at night too? I've just gone for a GoPro myself as my Contour Roam2 is great for simple recording in daytime but when sun sets its practically useless in darkness. I did find the Contour Roam2 a good starter helmet cam & a lot cheaper than those 2 you're looking at.

yep nights too i reckon, ive heard such mixed results from gopro that it seams like a lottery to getting a good or a bad one. im having such a tennis match between gopro and garmin. Gopro on general feedback which is mostly great and garmin on the fact i have alot of garmin products and they are so user friendly and ive never had a problem with one. what version of gopro would you suggest?

I'm thinking of a different course - I have a decent phone with a big memory card and have ordered but yet to take delivery of a Tigra ibikeconsole phone mount, partly in the hope that a combination of Strava and a free speedo app will mean I don't need a cyclo computer for 2 of my bikes, but also that I can record some video footage using my phone when its handlebar mounted. My phone has some form of image stabilisation on it already so fingers crossed.

If it helps, I'd avoid the Dogcam bullet HD as while they are cheap and robust, but with no viewfinder getting the angle and alignment is very hit and miss, they record in QuickTime so not great for pc users and the real killer isva poorly defined on/off button - so many times have I got out of sync and stopped recording when I thought I'd started. Of course a clever person may have no issues with this....

if you just want one to take vids to play back for a bit of fun you don't need either. i'd go for a muvi micro/atom or something else that's little and takes a decent vid. or alternatively just get a cheap one on ebay for not much more than a tenner, and if you get the bug you can upgrade
