Design and win a Trek Project One bike worth up to £3,200!

Get your creative juices flowing with our Christmas comp and you could be riding a brand new Trek in 2014...

It's always competition-tastic over here at road.cc, and this one might be our best yet. We've teamed up with the guys at Trek Bikes to give you the chance to win a custom Project One bike worth up to £3,200!

Trek's Project One programme allows you to customise your bike to get it just how you want it. Paint job, transmission, finishing kit... you can spec the lot. And then they'll build it up for you, just how you want it. Historically, it's been for the top-end bikes but as is ever and so in the bike world it's been trickling down and now the starting point is a 4 Series Madone or Domane frame, starting at £2,400.

And that's what you get to play with in this competition. Spec up your bike, up to a maximum budget of £3,200, enter it into our competition and cross your fingers. Entries are open until 10 Jan 2014, after which we'll pick a shortlist of 25 designs. You'll get the chance to vote on those designs, and the winner will get his or her bike built up by Trek and ride off happily into the sunset!

Sounds good? We think so. So head over to the competition page for full details of how to enter. Good luck!

Am I missing something or has this competition been cancelled?

just looked at the page of trek design entries. I assume this isn't all of them as the five I submitted and received confirmation of submission are not there! Don't mind if I don't win but i'd like to think I at least got the chance to be considered.

Is it next week yet Dave?
I'm looking forward to the battle between the most creative use of all black and migraine inducing chromatic dissonance.

There do appear to be a few issues in recalling the bike you've designed once you've saved it to your bike rack. I've just saved my screen shot into paint and saved as a png. If i am lucky enough to win i'm sure we can work it out 1 !

Hi all,

Firstly, thanks to everyone who has entered so far. This is meant to be a fun way for you all to play around with bike stuff.

The budget was chosen to make this a challenge. The idea is to focus on the paint, not on the components. So no, you can't have both top-of-the-line wheels AND drivetrain. This sacrifices the quality of the paint job.

The trick is to focus on the frame, which is really how people should be investing their money when they buy bikes in the first place. Components are cheap, and easy to replace.

We are looking for designs that have the most thought put into the design of the frame, and clever ways that people match bits of kit with it. Not frames that look pretty nice and have high end components.

Hope that helps!

Done, it was quite therapeutic to start with until the mrs saw me and went off on one about buying a new ride. I told her it was a competition but she's not having it.

I guess it depends on how it's being judged. If 25 names are randomly picked, irrespective of whether their design has previously been entered, then multiple entries are unimportant. If it is the best designs out of the lot, then that's problematic, especially when the latest gallery doesn't show all entries to date to ensure that other entrants don't come up with the same designs (and it gets more difficult to choose something original once more entries come in as you run out of colour schemes to use with only a few custom bike designs to actually choose from).

If it's the best designs/colour schemes, which ones will they choose, the first entrant with the design when later entrants might not have known it had already been entered? I even entered one a while back that someone went on to enter too, I think even using the same .png file I'd saved from the Trek site and uploaded as my entry first. Don't know whether to think it was nice they liked it so much to enter it for themselves - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that - but an easy way to enter I suppose, assuming they also checked out the build cost too.

I see that several people are spamming entries by entering many different combinations of colours and bikes. 45

Does this not make the competition a bit unfair?

What is to stop me entering hundreds of different designs which cover all the possible options available? 39

It would make more sense to limit the competition to one entry per person?

I did this competition last time around, the chances of winning are... you got to be in it to win it. I would just like to say this is easily the most fun you can have doing a competition if you like bicycles, awesome fun competition. I have been staring at my design for over an hour now, starting to drool out the corner of me mouth. 35

When I submit my entry I'm getting:

'Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator'. 31

OK, OK. The input validation script doesn't like the pound sign in 'Cost of your build'.

Erm...it's not working for me. When I create and save a Madone 4 bike and then later retrieve it from 'My Bike Rack', the bike has magically transformed into a Madone 7 and hence is over budget by about £1300! 102

Re: 'Fiasco' yeah I didn't win, but more than that some of the 'finalists' offended my artistic sensibilities. Some of the overly filtered instagram were just gaudy blurry rubbish of no merit or skill at all.
It just strikes me that some of the more classy subtle designs might get overlooked, if someone really designs something they really want it shouldn't have to be a monstrosity to win. I hope the judges have a good range of designs, but whether those voting will be as impartial, well who knows. Call this the Jedward effect or jealousy if you want.

I think they'll just pull 'em out of a hat, it's not really a design comp you know 1

My first "the gopper" came in over budget at £12,000

so went for understated elegance for the second.

A question for the competition organisers:

Just looking through the designs, some of the designs look pretty identical to me*. In such cases, are you going to go with the design that was submitted first?

Nice idea, but when I create a bike and save it to my 'bike rack', I get a completely different bike when I try to retrieve it. That is, I've created a mainly blue Madone 4, but I get an all black or a black and white Madone 7 when I try to retrieve it. I've given up now. That's 45 minutes I'll never get back.

Gets the creative juices flowing. But the winner will be voted on from a short list of 25. This sounds like the Autumn photograph competition instagram fiasco all over again! Unless you design some gaudy monstrosity you might not get a look in. Well I'll be off to design me a gaudy monstrosity.

Seems like a choice between aero wheels or a high level drivetrain not both 39
How exactly are they putting Sram and aero wheels on these and staying in budget?
