Axiom Kingston Commuter pannier

Price:
£39.00

A couple of decades ago it was common to see panniers like Axiom's Kingston Commuter Pannier, which were prevented from flapping up and down on the rack by a hook attached to an elastic strap. These days, that system has been superseded.

The attachment system is poor – one of the worst I've seen on any modern pannier.

Bags for a light tour

Hi, I need to survive 2 nights with what I can carry on my bike. Will be staying in hotels so no tent, towels etc. needed. I don't want to fit a full rack (no upper mounts and no desire for P-clips) but also don't want to use a back pack. Has anyone got experience of the "beam" racks that clamp onto the seatpost? Are they secure or can they bounce around.

What bags are good to sit on these? I'm thinking medium would be suitable to carry a light pair of trousers, trainers, top and wash kit.

Cheers

Tortec Expedition rear rack

Price:
£39.99

The Tortec Expedition rack is a good value option if you want your bike, rather than your back, to take the strain. Strong enough for a big load and and nicely constructed, it'll turn its hand to everything from the commute to a full-on tour.

Deuter Essential Bike bag pannier

Price:
£89.99

This classy bag from German luggage masters Deuter is almost the perfect companion for well-heeled commuters. Not so great if you want to stick a laptop in with your sandwiches though.

I was initially sceptical - the bag looked too small to be properly useful to me, but the main compartment extends once unzipped and has loads of space. It certainly passes the 'pair of shoes and assorted gubbins' test.

Genesis Equilibrium and racks/panniers

Morning all!

I'm on the hunt for a commuter bike/winter bike. My requirements are/were:

"Normal" road bike
Mudguard mounts
Rack mounts
No disc brakes (interesting tech, but early days!)
No cantis (a PITA to maintain IME)
Tigara as a minimum
Not bothered re. steel or aluminium

...all for £1000, or thereabouts.

Found a couple of bikes that tick all the boxes (Trek 1.5, Ridgeback Platinum, Giant Defy), but they left me cold...although the Ridgebacks look pleasingly sensible, so they're an outsider.

We love a bit of cycle touring, us, and we're never happier checking out panniers.

Altura Arc pannier (pair)

Price:
£79.99

Altura Arc are a pair of 20-litre lightweight panniers, well suited to commuting, club riding, audax, weekend touring and even moderate mountain biking thanks to waterproof construction and pressure fit Rixen Kaul attachments. These ensure they stay firmly put tackling bridle path at full-pelt, yet slip off in seconds at the shops. However, I would’ve preferred the mesh pockets integrated into the lids and heavy-duty nylon/TPU types are better choices if you’re habitually hauling the proverbial elephant, or riding in the foulest weathers.
