Council bosses in York are in talks with transport consultants involved in the implementation of London’s Congestion Charge about implementing a similar scheme in the historic city.

The news follows calls by cycling campaigners in the city, reported by road.cc at the weekend, for the council to charge motorists to avoid York’s streets becoming gridlocked.

Cyclists, motorists and local residents in York are to be given the chance to have their views heard regarding a contentious cycle lane in the city, introduced last year at Clifton Green junction.

Five million motorists cycle regularly according to a new study by the institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM)  and getting even more drivers on bikes is the key to less congestion, better health and less pollution, says the IAM. Its new study published today, Cycling Motorists (download link below) identifies the enormous potential for many more motorists to take up cycling either for leisure and more especially to replace car journeys.

Drivers in Cardiff were yesterday warned they must embrace alternative methods of transport like cycling or face a future of congestion, as the freedom motorists once took for granted to drive quickly into Cardiff at any time and park cheaply will be a thing of the past.

A major rethink of transport policy - including encouragement to cycle wherever possible – is the only way to tackle rising congestion, a new report says.

The Campaign for Better Transport says that traffic jams on motorways and trunk roads will simply get worse unless a smarter approach to traffic management is adopted.
