Bike refurbishment dilemma

I am currently playing with the idea of starting a cottage industry buying old, steel frames and doing them up. After a recent visit to Argos Racing Cycles in Bristol where they had many beautiful refurb jobs on display I was inspired to trawl the Internet for unwanted treasures with a view to bringing them back to their former glory. My dilemma is whether to focus on frame & fork only or venture into full-build territory. If I go with the latter do I try to keep things authentic - e.g. keep the down-tube shifters - or do I use modern technology?

L’Eroica: a good old-fashioned bike ride

Uh-oh! The chain has come off at the start of a steep, chalky climb. So I stop – well, more ‘fall off’ because I was out of the saddle when it happened – and put the chain back on as a dozen riders on classic bikes sail past. I get onto the saddle again, stamp on the pedals and the chain immediately comes off for a second time. I take a closer look… and see that the inner chainring has actually snapped. Damn it! There’s a long way to go and a lot of climbs to scale in just the 53-tooth outer ring. This could be tricky.

Hitting the Paris-Roubaix pavé with Team Sky

There are three riders in this paceline hammering across the pavé of northern France: Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins… and me. This is odd. Very odd. In fact, it’s absolute madness.

So, who in this particularly strained loaf-based analogy is going to be the tasty meat in this Sunday's sandwich, who's going to be the limp lettuce and will Hincapie be the dollop of mayonnaise that drops out and makes a sad mess on your shirt. Again.
