Carbon forks

Oval r911 JetStream II forks

Price:
£449.99

These are the brand new (and very posh) forks from Oval, the r911. Two models have been released that are underpinned by the same technology, the r911 (tested here) and the a911 which is intended for flat out, aerodynamic efforts such as time trials and triathlons. The r911 is the road performance model, it has raked blades for improved comfort and more responsive handling as well as being lighter for happier hill climbing while the blade shape is legal to use in both UCI and ITU (International Triathlon Union) sanctioned events.

Acor AFK-2606 Carbon road fork

Price:
£119.99

Acor’s AFK2606 is a pleasingly competent budget fork well suited to heavier riders and those seeking to improve handling and save weight on older machines. The alloy steerer might not set anyone’s Lycra ablaze but they’re more durable than carbon and lighter than Cro-moly. They also improve rigidity on larger framesets or those employing big spacer stacks.

Bother That Bung!!!

Friday afternoon spent rummaging in storage harvested my spare dynohub wheel based around a polished Weinnman rim laced to Shimano’s venerable Nexus dynohub topped off with stout WTB dual purpose rubber. Enjoying repute for nocturnal riding, I reasoned were I to subject myself to increased levels of resistance (Nexus cannot be switched off in the same fashion as costlier units) it might as well provide my lighting. Now, I remain an ardent fan of Ni Cad and Li-On high power systems but there’s something very satisfying about generating your own illumination.
