'Disc brakes will take over' - the man from TRP tells us why

Tektro have over 160 CNC machines working 24/7. They produce 20,000 road caliper brakes a month – nearly quarter of a million per year. And that’s nothing compared to the number of hydraulic disc brakes they make: 2.2 million per year. In short, they know a thing or two about brakes, so when the Marketing Director of TRP, Tektro’s high-end division, says that disc brakes are going to take over in every sector of cycling in the next few years, you have to take it seriously.

Altenburger centre-pull brakes

I just wanted to report a very positive experience with the Altenburger alloy centre pull dual pivot brakes that were commonly fitted to Raleigh and other 10 speeds made in the 1970s.

I've recently restored my old 1976 Raleigh Record (14kg of steel..) and as part of that replaced the rusty steel rims with new alloy rims. I decided to keep the old Altenburger alloy brakes for authenticity and because they still worked, but swapped out the pads and blocks with Ultegra cartridge pads and standard pads.

Replacing Brake Blocks

Hi All,

I've finally worn through my Shimano 105 5700 brake blocks and cant seem to find out what are suitable replacements. Im not sure if i can replace just the braking pad (as the 105 replacements seem to come with the whole block).

Also i'de ideally like to upgrade the pad if possible but am not sure what types will fit.

I should mention i have an alloy braking track on my wheels.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

We know SRAM are bringing hydro disc brakes to the market soon; it emerges they’re working on a hydro rim brake too

Centaur vs Chorus brakes

The thread in the adjuster barrel of my front brake caliper is shot so I'm looking to replace the whole thing - and probably the back one too as I don't think you can buy single calipers (can you?). My usual practice when replacing bits is to get slightly better quality gear than whatever it is I'm replacing - which in this case is Campag Centaur. So I'd be looking at Athena or Chorus if I followed this rule. I'm curiously drawn to Chorus but it would mean spending more than twice as much (£100+ instead of £40-50).

Advice for a niche in a niche

I've started a new build, a fixed Raleigh Courier rebuild in fact.

The forks are proper old, and upon contemplation, Ive decided to go for a disc brake up front.

So on the shopping list are:
700c Disc brake specific forks
Disc brake specific wheels, or hubs to put onto Open Pros
Disc brake calliper and rotor
Cable (mechanical)
Lever

I have literally no idea where to start, havibg never even ridden on disc brakes, but having been on the Internet all day (Study Leave Big Grin) I've built up a brand base. So far, I've come accross:

On One
Hope
Surly
Bankrupt
Avid
Shimano
