Bontrager 2012

The new Bontrager Aura 5s are very good aero wheels that, although not cheap, offer impressive value for money.

First, well done to Bontrager for getting the weights right. The Aura 5's published weights are 770g (f) and 970g (r) – and that's exactly what they measured on the road.cc scales, plus 68g and 70g for the quick release skewers.

Before Keith Bontrager was assimilated by the Trek Corporation and his name appeared on their whole gamut of finishing kit he was a renowned mountain bike frame builder and his off-road heritage is visible in these Jones CXR cyclo-cross tyres that look like a small mountain bike tyre, or one that's far away.

Bontrager's Sport Commuter Rainshell jacket cuts a dash whether in the saddle, on tour or just meandering round town thanks to its tasteful blue/grey livery and tailored fit. Pockets are limited to hip and poacher types complete with LED tab but adequate for parking hands and stashing spare batteries, lights, keys and generic nick nacks. The close cut flatters both cycling and civvie wardrobes handsomely but remember when riding to drop the front and pit zips or you'll feel like a steamed pudding after 20 minutes enthusiastic effort.
