Bib shorts

The first thing you notice about these Etxeondo Feather bib shorts is just how light they are. It's not often you say that about a pair of shorts, but our medium-sized pair weighed in at just 125g (just over the manufacturer's claimed 119g). Etxeondo (pronounced et-chay-on-doe) reckon they're the lightest bib shorts on the market and we reckon they're probably right.

The Oneten Primo bib shorts put in a solid performance for summer riding.

The shorts are made from six panels of a mid-weight polyamide/elastane that are cut to give a good anatomical shape. The wide leg grippers are made from a double thickness of similar (though not exactly the same) fabric. There's no silicone inside there, though, so they don't hold onto your legs as well as some. I found they could slide up a little in use – not loads, but a bit.

These Louis Garneau Mondo Evo shorts might not be cheap but they put in a high-level performance to justify their price tag.

These Etxeondo Attaque shorts are excellent but there's just one thing that puts us off and that's the small matter of the £230 price tag.

Off somewhere hot for a training camp, or just hoping from some hot weather later in the year... or even now? Pearl Izumi's Elite In-R-Cool bib shorts promise "optimal cooling and reflective sun protection", and certainly they seem to take the edge off the hot days. On top of that, they're very comfy in use and the pad is good too.

A set of thermal shorts might seem an odd concept – shorts are for when it's warm, or for wearing underneath cosy longs when it isn't – but Rapha's Pro Team Thermal bib shorts actually work. Sort of.
