Bryan Chapman Memorial, What I ate

What I ate on the 600km Bryan Chapman Memorial

People are always asking "I'm doing a 50 mile training ride, what should I eat?"

Here's the sort of stuff us Audax types eat. Did about 400 miles by the end of the weekend, after riding to the event

Lightweight Saddlebag Alternative

Using a drybag as a lightweight saddlebag is the topic of the latest post on the audaxing blog

http://audaxing.wordpress.com/2012/05/16/lightweight-saddlebag-substitute/

In a sense there is no point in doing this for weight saving (even though it saves a whole kilo) as the bag will contain lots of heavy stuff. Also it's nothing compared to the vast bulk of the person on the bike

Anyway, drybags are great and worth considering for bike luggage

Things I learnt on my 300km audax

1) If you're packing for a 300km audax and you have a choice of mending a small hole in your best, comfiest shorts or packing some other shorts, MEND THE HOLE IN YOUR BEST SHORTS.

2) Check your equipment. For example, if you make sure your charging lead for your phone isn't a loose fit then you won't have to fashion a rudimentary cable support out of zip ties halfway round and spend the rest of the ride only able to see half the screen. For example.

Jamis: the next Quest

I reviewed the Jamis Quest not so long ago; if you're looking for a steel machine for long distance riding then it's a fantastic ride, comfortable and fast. I've managed to keep hold of it to dome some of the kind of riding it's perfect for; first up is the 300km Old Roads Audax (www.ukcyclist.org.uk/oldroads) heading out from Honiton on Saturday.

Old Roads 300km

Anyone heading down to this next weekend? I'm going, it'll be my first 300km audax (although i did a longer day ride last year) so also be grateful for any tips from peeps who have ridden it before...

Spa Cycles Derwent Leather Saddle Bag

Price:
£30.00

A leather saddlebag is a classic cycling accessory that my grandad would have found familiar. That said, it's hard to avoid the phrase 'Gucci manbag' when trying to describe this offering from Spa Cycles.

'The Kidderminster Killer' & 'From Clee to Heaven'

August 18, 2012 - 08:00

The Kidderminster Killer = 213km & From Clee to Heaven = 120km. The Kidderminster Killer is one the hardest known 200km audaxes in the UK. This epic classic starts from Worcestershire and heads off to Mid-Wales and back. With 3,750m of climbing through Salop and The Marches,... more

Ribble winter trainer/audax / Genesis Croix de Fer - Advice please!

Having just moved 8 miles out of town, I'm looking for something I can use to run the commute and for a bit of weekend fun/fitness, and that I can maybe think about doing some light touring on. I'm after a decent balance of speed and comfort, and something I can ride year-round.

I had been looking at a Genesis Croix de Fer, as that seems to be a sturdy workhorse that could easily cope with winter commutes and would be a bit of fun for the weekends. My concerns, though, are the weight and the price.

FS: Condor Heritage, frameset or complete, size 55

New Condor Heritage frame, bought 4 weeks ago for a tour that's not now going to happen. The frame has been built up and ridden approximately 3 miles to check everything works, and is in unmarked condition. For sale either as a frameset (frame, fork, headset and bottom bracket) or as a complete bike.

Details of full bike build as follows:

• size 55cm Condor Heritage frame (55.5cm top tube: I'm 5'11" and it fits me perfectly with a 110mm stem, I'd say it would fit riders from about 5'9" to 6'1", depending on how long a reach you're after)
• 105 compact chainset, also brand new
