Tour de France 2013 Preview

A first visit to Corsica, a time trial with Mont-Saint-Michel as the backdrop, a summit finish on Mont Ventoux, an unprecedented double ascent of the Alpe d’Huez, and in another first, a grand finale at night on the Champs-Elysées – organisers ASO have done all they can to ensure the 100th edition of the Tour de France will be a memorable one. Here’s our stage-by-stage preview.

How to make a pair of Northwave shoes

Italian brand Northwave is 20 years old this year so we paid them a visit last week to wish them a happy birthday, check out next year’s range and take a look around their place in Onigo, near Treviso.

Northwave started out in 1993 making mountain bike shoes, but soon expanded into the road market. Since then, their shoes have been worn by the likes of Mario Cipollini, Tom Boonen, and Philippe Gilbert, along with Team Leopard Trek and then Radioshack Nissan Trek.

Trial Of Wight

Standing at the start I look down at my bar-tape and a section on the left-hand side just on the curve above the brake hood is tatty and ragged where it was clawed by an angry dangling bramble during ride over a week ago. Normally this would irritate me to the point of itchy-fingernails anxiety, can’t start a ride with scruffy bar-tape, it’s just not done, I even have some new tape with which I could have rectified the situation and frankly I’m quite disappointed with myself. But right now I have bigger worries on my mind.

12 of the fastest aero road bikes

The future is aero. Look at many of the bikes and products released in the last couple of years and it's easy to see the industry is focusing on aerodynamics. More and more manufacturers now stepping up to offer aero road bikes, arguably the biggest trend in road cycling right now, so we've rounded up 12 of the fastest for you.

'Disc brakes will take over' - the man from TRP tells us why

Tektro have over 160 CNC machines working 24/7. They produce 20,000 road caliper brakes a month – nearly quarter of a million per year. And that’s nothing compared to the number of hydraulic disc brakes they make: 2.2 million per year. In short, they know a thing or two about brakes, so when the Marketing Director of TRP, Tektro’s high-end division, says that disc brakes are going to take over in every sector of cycling in the next few years, you have to take it seriously.

A sense of place… Why 'terroir' makes the great races what they are

The French call it terroir. It doesn’t really have an equivalent in English, but describes the effect of soil, climate, aspect and general growing conditions have on grapes and the wines they produce. It’s not too hard to distinguish in some cases, most of us who like a glass can, if pushed, taste the difference between an Australian Shiraz and a French Syrah (the same grape) even if that bottle of Côte du Rhone doesn’t have the grape name written on it anywhere.

Inside the Giro d'Italia with Vittoria Servizio Corse - the peloton's Guardian Angels

Besides producing tyres - the company celebrates its 60th anniversary this year - Vittoria is also neutral service provider for races such as all the events organised by RCS Sport, including the Giro d'Italia, earning the nickname "the Guardian Angels of the peloton." So when an invitation arrives asking if we'd like a seat in a car for a stage of this year's race, naturally we jump at it - it's an unmissable chance to see the Giro from the inside.

Riding the Marrakech Atlas Étape

This is brilliant. I’m over three hours into the Marrakech Atlas Étape having scaled the single big 2,129m ascent, the skies are blue, I’m way out in front on my own and my legs feel great. All I need to do now is ride back down the mountain and then do the 20 miles or so on the flat back to the start/finish. It couldn’t be going any better. Forty minutes later, I have to pull out with hypothermia.

Bikes like the pros ride (but slightly more affordable*) from Bianchi, Merida, Focus, Lapierre, Scott and BMC

In the first Six Affordable Pro Race Bikes feature we gathered together six bikes that are cheaper versions of the bikes raced by the professionals, and here are another six. In most cases, the frames are based very closely on those ridden by the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, but with a few changes so they're not quite as eye-wateringly expensive. No, these bikes aren't cheap, but they're more affordable than a 100% pro-level race bike.

Disc brakes v rim brakes: which are more aero?

Disc brakes are probably the hottest topic of debate in the world of road bike technology right now, SRAM and TRP having recently revealed new designs with other major manufacturers being rumoured to be about to join them. Another big development in the road bike market over the past few years has been an increased concentration on aerodynamics.
