Pirelli launches PZero Velo bicycle tyre range

Italian tyre company returns to cycling market with three new tyres

Pirelli is bringing its expertise in high-performance tyre manufacturing to the cycling market with the launch today of its PZero Velo range.

The Italian company has been involved in the cycling market before. It reminds us that actually supplied tyres for 30 of the 49 finishers of the first ever Giro d’Italia in 1909. Apparently, even the legendary Fausto Coppi rode the tyres during his career We never knew that. It also transpires that Pirelli owned the Clement brand for a while during the 1980s.

Pirelli is using its PZero name for the new bicycle tyres, the same as used for its high-performance car and motorbike tyres, and which it says has “symbol of high technology, exclusive solutions and high performance” for over 30 years.

Yes, it's a car tyre, but we don't have any photos of the bicycle tyres yet...

The range will consist of three tyres, and it’ll use the same colour coding system as it does in Formula One, the motor racing series it sponsors. There’s silver for the road racing tyres, red for time trial and blue for four season tyres.

It hasn’t yet offered any specific details about the new tyre but says more information will be available at a launch event in June before they are available to buy in September. We’re keen to know more and are pestering them for details.

"We are excited about this return to cycling - says Antonella Lauriola, COO Business Unit Velo Pirelli. "For our bike tyres, we draw on a unique heritage of knowledge, technology and sporting experience. Pirelli's offer today is completed with tyres made for those consumers who look for innovative and technological bike products as they do for their cars and bikes. We chose to start from the racing segment, which is the most challenging in technical terms, but also the most consistent with our race-marked history."

For now, with this lack of specific detail about the tyre range, here's the company's cycling website where it says it'll be unveiling more info soon. http://veloworld.pirelli.com/global/en-ww/velo

I hope they will last longer than their F1 P Zero tyres, or we'll be trying to arrange a pit crew for longer rides..!

If my experience of their car tyres is anything to go by, they will be fantastic in the dry and terrifying at the slightest hint of moisture on the road!

Shame the website content clearly isn't written by a cyclist and then translated by someone with a poor grasp of English, that and the dumb decision to sponsor the descender prize at the Giro, not a great start...

They also won't actually be making their own tyres, they are rebranding someone elses...

I do the know why, but I'm little bit excited about this. Yes, I'll end up buying some just to have some Pirelli shoes on my wheels.

Coppi may have ridden on Pirelli tyres, though as he was born in 1919 I doubt he finished the 1909 Giro.

Road.cc seem to be adhereing more and more to the 'never let the facts get in the way great story' school of journalism.

Either that or no-one can be arsed to check anything before publishing it.

I had clearly disengaged my brain when I wrote that! Thank goodness it's the internet and you can change typos

I'm pretty sure they meant, Coppi got himself some when he was around and used them a long time after 1909 Giro!
