At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The latest K-Edge Garmin mount improves compatibility, works well and is nicely made, but it's an expensive replacement for the mount Garmin now supply.

This is the updated K-Edge Garmin mount which offers easy installation with a two-bolt split aluminium clamp, with increased compatibility with a range of Garmin computers due to a new removable plastic insert in the circular mount. The sleeker design loses the horizontal adjustment of the previous version though.

Alternative mounts like the K-Edge, commonly called 'out-front' mounts for want of a better name, simply clamp to the handlebars and float the Garmin ahead of the bar. It's a more elegant solution than using rubber bands to attach the regular mount to the stem or bars, and there's the added bonus that the Garmin's screen is easier to view when you're riding, particularly in an aggressive position like on the drops.

Installing the K-Edge is simple. The split clamp design is secured by two small Allen bolts that screw in from the bottom. It takes just a matter of minutes to fix to the bars. Once in place it's very secure. Over rough roads it doesn't budge. I took to applying a narrow strip of electrical tape between the clamp and bars, just to guard against the potential for scratching the carbon handlebar.

The nice thing about the K-Edge compared to the SRAM Quickview mount is that it places the Garmin lower, just like the Raceware Direct mount. It's a small but noticeable difference when riding. Back-to-back testing confirmed the lower position to be personally preferable. Whether that should influence the buying decision is another matter.

So it works well, provides a nice alternative position for the Garmin and is super secure with it. Downsides? Well it's heavier on account of its alloy construction, and it's also very expensive. Both the SRAM and RaceWare Direct mounts are considerably cheaper, and lighter as well. And let's not forget the regular Garmin mount is supplied free with the unit. The K-Edge does look pretty trick though, it comes in three colours and there's the increased compatibility if you have a number of devices.

The K-Edge is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminium with an injection moulded plastic mount insert, using the standard quarter-turn interface. It only fits 31.8mm handlebars and works with Garmin Edge 200, 500, 510, 800, 810 and Forerunner 310XT, 910XT computers.

Verdict

An expensive mount that only offers the advantage of increased compatibility over its rivals.
