The Madison Elevate is a soft shell gilet that works well for pretty much any outdoor activity, whether it involves 2 wheels or not. This is one of those garments that just feels perfect the minute you put it on.
It’s made from M:tec 3000. I hadn’t heard of it either. It’s good stuff though: breathable, windproof and waterproof.Actually, the blurb says – with refreshing honesty – that as the jacket is not seam taped, they class it as water-resistant as opposed to waterproof. They certainly have my permission to go with the latter, impressively so. Not that you’d expect it looking at the gilet. Although it’s not lined it’ll keep you nice and warm. It’s all good.
The cut is quite relaxed with a slightly longer back. It manages to be comfortable on relaxed bike rides without looking like a cycling gilet. The best way to describe the length, I think, is “just right”.
It’s got two nice sized, zipped hand pockets, a “Napoleon” pocket (outside, on the left chest) perfect for your sunnies or your mobile, and a chest pocket on the inside that is more generously sized. It’s a shame both chest pockets are on the same side, not particularly handy if you’ve got items in both.
The main zip is reversed (to keep water out) and 2-way, which is handy for when you get a bit lower on the bike and you don’t want the front to bunch up too much. It’s got a nicely snug high collar with a draw cord to keep the weather out. The collar is one of the features that makes a large contribution to the overall feel of the gilet.
It’s got some reflective detailing on the right shoulder and left chest; a bit on the small side if you like to be seen in the dark. Sizing is generous and available in small to x-large. It comes in any colour as long as it’s black.
Verdict
Fits just right; great for any outdoor activity.
