At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Vulpine Men's Merino Button Jersey looks good, feels lovely and expresses a light and easy attitude to summer riding.

When parting with your hard earned cash you want to ensure your shiny new purchase is fit for purpose and looks good. This certainly applies to jerseys and even more so when you're paying £80.

There is an increasingly bigger selection but none has created such a buzz as UK based brand Vulpine. Launched in March 2012 the range has grown and the plaudits followed suit.

So what is the fuss all about? Attention to detail in styling and choice of materials are top of the list. You can tell there is a level of application in the creation of these garments and the end result is a joy to wear.

In this case it is the Merino Button jersey, a collar-less jersey with - you guessed it - buttons replacing the traditional zip on the front and a wealth of nice, well thought out additions.

The fit is good and more importantly the Tasmanian merino wool provides a really nice feel when worn next to the skin.

The cut is cycling-specific with an elongated tail. The silicone waist gripper ensures everything remains in place.

There are two large open pockets on the rear, sandwiching a smaller zipped pocket. The thought process behind the pocket pattern is aimed at creating a more casual riding jersey. Most traditional style cycling jerseys have the pockets higher up. If you want to use this without a pack and are used to stuffing your pockets you'll find the jersey tail then hangs down quite low and you're missing the essence of the jersey. This is for riding free and light.

One of those neat additional touches I mentioned earlier can be found on the middle zipper pocket, a reflective light loop emphasising the easy nature of this top.

The jersey handles a heavy workload with aplomb. No matter how hard you work, the jersey wicks very well, disperses odours really efficiently and leaves you dry and your friends still talking to you. There is no irritation from seams or stitching so you are left to concentrate on riding.

The buttons on the front are engraved with a V and there are no scratchy labels to cause discomfort. There are four colours to choose from, besides the fern green you can select astral blue, claret or grey

In summary, the Vulpine Merino Button jersey captures what summer riding should be; comfortable, effortless with plenty of style.

Verdict

Stylish and efficient jersey that adds to your wardrobe options. Looks good on or off the bike.

The button jersey offers you a robust top, with some clever innovations. The removal of any material labels prevent scratching, the reflective light loop and the angled pockets are well thought out.

Rate the product for performance:

9/10

The merino used in this jersey is really efficient at wicking away sweat but having done that it doesn't hold on to it so keeps you on good terms with your mates.

Rate the product for durability:

Wears well and the merino is a decent thickness so shows no sign of proving fallible.

Rate the product for weight, if applicable:

The jersey isn't the lightest but then it doesn't set out to be. The material used has other qualities which make the button jersey more impressive.

Using merino products generally has most people commenting on how comfortable they feel next to the skin. This is no exception.

Rate the product for value:

Some may baulk at the price given that it could be used more as a top to be worn off the bike but don't discount it until you seen what it has to offer.

Style and good at what it should do, it's a winning combination.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

The length is more of a personal choice. At first I filled the pockets as I normally would and then found the back of the jersey hung down far to low. Don't and it's fine.

Did you enjoy using the product? Very much and attracted a few impressed comments.

Would you consider buying the product? Yes

Would you recommend the product to a friend? Yes

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?
