At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

This windproof gilet from Nalini is a simple and effective bit of kit that's a very versatile addition to your wardrobe. Warm enough for cool mornings but not too hot to keep on once the sun emerges, it's a good choice for Spring and Autumn runs.

The gilet is mainly fashioned from a thickish roubaix fabric with a fairly open weave. The fleecy inner is both warm and comfortable but the loose weave means it's not too hot on the climbs. The front of the gilet also sports a layer of MantoTex windproofing which does a very good job of keeping the breeze off your vitals. At the front there's a full length zip and a slightly raised collar; to the rear there's three deep pockets and a slightly dropped tail. Construction is very good, with tidy seams and nice detailing.

I've been wearing this gilet for two months and it was on my back in the Pyrenees a few weeks back over a couple of cols. In fairly warm weather on the climb of the Marie Blanque it never got too sweaty, and descending from the Aubisque in a chilly fog it did a great job of keeping me warm. It's a good choice for days when you're not sure how the weather will pan out (most days, then). Stuff a pair of armwarmers and a lightweight jacket in the pockets and you can cope with most conditions, and should the sun make an appearance you won't bake.

Verdict

A well made, versatile top that's a handy addition to your wardrobe.
