At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

My daughter's reaction to me trying on the Polaris RBS Grid jacket was simply, 'WOW'. There really isn't an excuse for, 'sorry mate, I didn't see you,' if you're wearing this. To say the jacket is bright is an understatement.

This is possibly the brightest hi-viz jacket I have come across. There's no denyiing that hi-viz gear divides opinion among cyclists - with some seeing it as a vital safety aid while others regard it as no substitute for drivers looking properly or indeed a step towards putting the onus on vulnerable road users to be seen rather than on drivers to look. Everyone has a view, but it if hi-viz makes you feel safer on the road then it's doing you some good.

The point of the Grid jacket is to ensure you are seen by other road users, whether you are commuting, racing or mountain biking. The main features include Hi Viz Grid technology, designed to capture the attention of other road users. This is supplemented by Radiant reflect print technology, again aimed at handling the traffic with ease by making sure you are never left in the dark.

That's the marketing line and the RBS Grid jacket leaves nothing to chance in terms of visibility. This could be an ideal commuting companion. Given the price tag of £74.99, this is quite a lot of jacket for the money.

I had a medium to try out but even though I normally take a large, this fitted fine. With a base layer and a jersey underneath there was no struggle to get the jacket on. On the bike the RBS Grid felt comfortable.

The outer material is made from Hydrovent that will keep the weather out. The moisture is controlled on the inside by a mesh liner allowing it to transfer through an outer membrane. If you're worried about overheating, there are two large zips on either side that will allow plenty of ventilation to circulate around the inside. I've used this is in the cold and the rain and always arrived feeling comfortable and dry.

To make sure the fit on the RBS Grid is snug and doesn't allow any unwanted draughts you can adjust the sleeves with the velcro tabs. On the hem and the collar, there are elastic draw cords that give you the option to baton down the hatches.

For storage, you have two options. On the rear there is quite a large pocket, with a reasonable lining for keeping essentials in. There is a second choice, a breast pocket but this is on the small side.

Verdict

Eye-wateringly bright jacket that will make you stand out on the road.
