At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Bontrager race bullhorn handlebars are made from custom butten 2014-T6 aluminium and feel equally at home on your time-trial/triathlon bike or your fixed.

They only come 420mm wide (measured centre-to-centre, they are 440mm end-to-end) but they are available in a choice of diameters: standard (26mm stem clamp size); or oversize (31.8mm stem clamp size), which is the version we tested. They’re designed to work with aero-brake levers and sport a single groove for cable routing.

There’s just enough oversize area to fit clip-on handlebars; the drop starts just where the taper from oversize to ‘grip-size’ stops. This resulting hand position next to the stem takes a little bit of getting used to but is actually really comfy and makes for a very stylish looking handlebar set-up. You don't have to be super-flexy get down down in the drops the position is not that low, but there’s enough to get a bit lower into a headwind.

I mainly used them on my fixer; they felt reassuringly stiff even honking up hills for dear life. This is good, you really do not want your handlebars to break riding fixed. Don’t ask me how I know this… At the same time, the cunning drop seems to soak up more road buzz than comparable oversize bullhorns I’ve tried.

At £29.99 I reckon these are a bit of a bargain. They look the business, they provide four comfortable hand positions and they’re well made. Highly recommended.

Verdict

Stylish, sturdy and comfortable bullhorn handlebars for your fixer or TT bike.
