After a long race, sportive or training ride, you can help muscle recovery by taking on some protein. One way to do this is munch on a Multipower Fit Protein Flapjack – and it's a very tasty option indeed.
Each 70g bar contains 18g of protein, along with 33g of carbohydrate and 7.7g of fat - of which 1.4 is saturated. The main ingredients include oats, milk protein, glucose syrup and vegetable oils, and there are two topping varieties: Chocolate or Yoghurt. The Yoghurt Topping bar also contains cranberry.
The taste is delicious. The texture is slightly more chewy and less crumbly than a normal shop-bought flapjack. The Fit Protein Flapjacks are also slightly less sweet, making them perfect after rides where you might have had enough of sweet gels and energy bars.
The Multipower website says that you can also eat these Protein Flapjacks before exertion, although they're not really suitable for during a long hard ride, as the carb-to-protein ratio is too high. Most sports science studies indicate that an ideal carb-to-protein ratio for endurance events over two or three hours is between 10:1 and 4:1. Of course, if you're touring or just tootling around then you can eat a Protein Flapjack or anything else pretty much when you want.
You can also eat these flapjacks as a general snack at work or home instead of a normal shop-bought flapjack (which tend to have a higher proportion of refined sugars and saturated fat), making Protein Fit Flapjacks a healthier option - and more useful if you're trying to keep your weight down.
These Fit Protein Flapjacks retail for £1.49 each or just under £27 for a box of 18 from the Multipower on-line store. (At time of writing, the box of 18 is discounted to £23.99)
Verdict
Tasty source of protein to help muscle recovery after a long ride - and a healthy snack any time.
