At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Tornado jacket from Polaris is a garment for cold weather cycling. To keep you comfortable on those long winter rides, the panelling on the chest and sleeves is fully windproof.

In fact the Tornado is so good at keeping the elements at bay, when the temperature does rise it becomes something of hinderance.

As you want from a windproof jacket, it's fitting as opposed to being loose. Nothing to catch in the wind, flapping around and causing drag or annoyance.

It's made from Thermatek fabric which makes the jacket warm, breathable and comfortable. This combination is part of the Tornado's 'climate control system,' balancing the needs of the rider whether they are climbing or descending.

So it has proven; whether it's been a cold early morning ride or a misty homeward ride, the Tornado has rebuffed the winds. It can feel overworked if you really work up a sweat - the Thermatek fabric can't get rid of the moisture fast enough but this is only something you notice when you take the jacket off.

If you were to get caught in a shower the Tornado would need another layer on top to prevent it from filling up like a sponge. Avoid the wet stuff and you've got a jacket that fits well and performs very well at regulating your temperature.

Externally the jacket has some nice touches. There are four elasticated pockets on the rear; the two on either end are sloped to allow easier access. This still leaves two sizable pouches in the centre and there is the added bonus of a zippered security pocket on the rear too. There are thumbloops and an extended collar to help prevent chills.

Reflective pipping adds some additional hi viz elements. Coupled with the jacket's black and orange colouring this gives an eye catching mix for drivers and doesn't look bad off the bike either.

Verdict

Softshell winter jacket that keeps the wind out and the warmth in

The Tornado won't whip up a storm at this price (Ouch! I'd say get yer coat, but you've already got one - Ed).

Comfy, fitted well and looks good.

It could do with a breast pocket, inside or out wouldn't matter. Something to keep your essentials in other than a zipped pocket at the rear that is likely to get covered in all sorts during the winter months.
