Fibrax Powershift Sport Stainless Steel Gear Cables are affordable everyday replacements with looks and performance that are impressive for the price. Ours proved initially susceptible to cable stretch and fraying so leave them overnight before correcting, cropping and crimping come the morning.
The compressionless,Teflon lined polyester housing for these cables comes in a choice of five cheerful colours (black, blue, white, silver or red) and hosts a 1.1mm stainless steel inner wire. Rubberised ferrules might lack rigidity but work just fine without any risk of scratching the frame.
They were supple enough to install in 20 minutes. On the stand there was little separating them from premium models, delivering swift and surprisingly slick shifts in both directions. Unfortunately cable stretch made things decidedly sloppy across a wide ratio touring triple.
Releasing the cable anchor bolt and pulling the inner wire a few millimetres solved this. For the first hundred miles in foul weather, performance was nigh on what I've come to expect from premium models, under load or through the stop start of town centre traffic.
A quick shot of PTFE spray's needed to retain their initial zing in the longer term but we're talking every couple of weeks when used in all weathers. Some might baulk at this and the omission of those little rubberised paint protectors but £12 hardy constitutes a kings' ransom and makes a great workshop staple; good enough in performance terms for mid-range bikes but cheap enough for workhorses.
Nice workshop staples that perform very sweetly with careful instalation and periodic shots of PTFE lube.
