At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Lezyne Classic Puncture Repair Kit has proved hard to fault. No matter how good your tyres, maintenance or riding style, sooner or later, we all succumb to the dreaded hiss. Pisssssspharp! If there's no ruinous gash needing a new tube, this is a  decent patch kit that will get you home.

Being a company that places great emphasis on design, Lezyne have solved the rattley box problem by squeezing a 7cc tube of vulcanising solution, stainless steel scuffer, eight feathered edge patches of various sizes with a contingency tyre boot that doubles up as repair instructions into a small, square plastic tub. Its arrival proved timely, since on the return leg of a stormy ride, I fell prey to two savage cuts caused by jagged particles of broken glass piercing both the casing of my tyre and thorn-resistant tube.

Giving the localised wounds a cursory scuffing, I pierced the tube of surprisingly pungent rubber solution, smeared it liberally over the affected areas and left curing for the recommended two minutes before compressing the patch for a minute or so. Turning my attentions to the carcass, it was a case of extracting deeply embedded shrapnel using a set of tweezers and filling the gash with the emergency boot before cursing myself, having left the Co2 inflator at home.

Tube reinstated and 550 strokes of the hand pump later, we were 80psi better off and bowling home. Ten miles later and in the comfort of my kitchen, I went on a tube-patching binge, successfully reviving two out of three featherweight types left languishing in a corner of the garage. In centrally heated environments, the solvent cures in around forty-five seconds and patches stuck fast in around two minutes, unfazed by tricky seams. I even managed to fix some holes right by the valve stem with the help of a clothes peg.

Verdict

Great value, dependable repair kit.

But does it also contain French talc, it's not a truly "classic" puncture repair kit without it.

Perhaps I should clarify 1

Leave the pegs in situ for ten minutes-longer if patching from the comfort of home. Once satisfied said patch won't lift or peel, pop the pegs back in your wedge/saddlebag/jersey pocket/neighbour's peg bag and remount the tyre as usual.

It's a technique I've employed in the past year or so to give patches the best possible chance of staying put.

How do you get the tyre back on with the pegs sticking out like that?

Looks good but I'll stick with the trusty Rema tip top.

Ps how did the clothes peg help?
